Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Safely operate a commercial or non-commercial motor vehicle (e.g., box truck, van, tractor-trailer) in compliance with all company policies, local, state, and federal Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
- Execute a daily delivery schedule along a pre-determined route, ensuring all stops are made in a timely and logical sequence to meet customer and business deadlines.
- Load and unload products from the delivery vehicle, utilizing proper material handling equipment such as hand trucks, pallet jacks, or forklifts, while ensuring product integrity and preventing damage.
- Meticulously verify the accuracy of each order before departure and upon delivery, checking items and quantities against shipping documents, invoices, or delivery manifests.
- Provide exceptional front-line customer service during delivery interactions, professionally addressing customer inquiries, resolving minor issues, and representing the company with a positive and helpful attitude.
- Collect payments from customers upon delivery (COD), accurately handling cash, checks, and credit card transactions, and ensuring all funds are properly secured and reconciled at the end of the shift.
- Obtain necessary signatures or electronic proof of delivery (POD) from customers to confirm receipt of goods and maintain accurate, legally binding delivery records.
- Utilize handheld electronic devices, scanners, and onboard computers to manage delivery statuses, track inventory, process transactions, and communicate with dispatch or management.
- Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, meticulously checking fluid levels, tire pressure, brakes, lights, and other critical components, and report any maintenance issues or defects promptly.
- Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the assigned vehicle, both inside the cab and in the cargo area, to ensure a safe and professional working environment.
- Accurately complete all required paperwork, including driver logs (ELDs), delivery reports, vehicle inspection reports, and any incident or accident reports, in a neat and timely manner.
- Communicate effectively and proactively with dispatch, supervisors, and other team members regarding route changes, traffic delays, delivery issues, or any other critical operational information.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe lifting techniques, and defensive driving practices to prevent injuries and accidents.
- Manage on-board inventory, ensuring products are secure during transit and that any returned goods, empty containers, or undeliverable items are properly documented and returned to the warehouse.
- Navigate routes efficiently using GPS devices, maps, and local knowledge to minimize travel time and fuel consumption while adapting to unforeseen road closures or traffic conditions.
- For sales-focused roles, actively identify opportunities to upsell or cross-sell additional products and services to existing customers during delivery stops.
- Rotate and merchandise stock at the customer's location as required, ensuring older products are moved to the front and shelves are neat, particularly in retail or food service environments.
- Build and maintain strong, positive relationships with regular customers on the route, becoming a trusted and familiar face of the company.
- Assist in the warehouse with order picking, staging, and loading when not actively driving, contributing to overall team efficiency.
- Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times, wearing the company uniform and acting as a consistent brand ambassador in the field.
Secondary Functions
- Assist warehouse staff with inventory counts, order picking, and staging during periods of high volume or when route duties are complete.
- Provide on-the-job training and guidance to new or less experienced drivers, sharing knowledge of routes, customer preferences, and company procedures.
- Participate in team safety meetings, offering feedback and suggestions for improving operational safety and efficiency.
- Perform minor vehicle upkeep, such as cleaning and fluid top-offs, between scheduled professional maintenance appointments.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Valid Driver’s License appropriate for the vehicle type (e.g., Class A/B CDL, standard Class C/D).
- Clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) with a proven history of safe driving.
