Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Safely operate a company vehicle over an established route to service and sell products to a diverse base of retail and business customers.
- Proactively identify sales opportunities to grow the existing customer base, including upselling and cross-selling the full portfolio of company products.
- Cultivate and maintain strong, long-term relationships with key decision-makers at each account, acting as a trusted business partner.
- Effectively manage on-truck inventory to ensure product availability, minimize out-of-stocks, and reduce waste or stale products.
- Merchandise store shelves, coolers, and displays to ensure proper inventory levels, product rotation (FIFO), and an attractive, shoppable appearance.
- Generate and process customer invoices, accurately collect payments via cash, check, or electronic methods, and manage account receivables for the route.
- Prospect for and secure new customers within the assigned territory to consistently grow the route's overall volume and profitability.
- Utilize handheld computer systems and other technologies for order entry, inventory tracking, sales reporting, and customer data management.
- Skillfully negotiate for optimal shelf space, product placement, and the setup of promotional displays to maximize visibility and drive sales.
- Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure the truck is safe, clean, and in good operating condition, reporting any issues promptly.
- Resolve customer complaints and service issues promptly and professionally, ensuring a high level of customer satisfaction and retention.
- Execute company-led marketing and promotional initiatives at the store level to support brand objectives and increase consumer purchases.
- Maintain an accurate and up-to-date log of sales activities, customer interactions, and route performance metrics.
- Stay informed about new products, service offerings, and competitive activities in the market, providing valuable feedback to the sales management team.
- Adhere to all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and company safety policies, prioritizing safe driving and material handling practices at all times.
- Forecast customer product needs based on sales history, seasonality, and upcoming promotions to optimize order quantities.
- Actively manage and rotate back-stock inventory at customer locations, ensuring freshness and accessibility for store staff.
- Systematically build and tear down promotional displays, ensuring all point-of-sale materials are current and correctly placed.
- Manage the return of unsold or out-of-date products according to company policy, ensuring proper credit is issued and documentation is complete.
- Collaborate with internal teams, such as warehouse staff and sales support, to ensure smooth operations and fulfillment of customer needs.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in the field training and onboarding of new Route Sales Representatives by sharing best practices and route knowledge.
- Provide coverage and support for other routes during team member vacations, illnesses, or periods of high demand.
- Actively participate in district or regional sales meetings, contributing insights and collaborating with peers on sales strategies.
- Gather and report intelligence on competitor pricing, promotions, and new product introductions observed in the field.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Valid Driver’s License (e.g., Class C or as required) and a clean, insurable driving record.
- Experience in Direct Store Delivery (DSD) operations and processes.
- Proficiency in using handheld mobile computers, scanners, and proprietary sales software.

Experience Requirements
Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years in a role involving sales, customer service, or route-based delivery.
