Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Serve as a highly visible and welcoming presence in designated zones, proactively engaging with community members, visitors, and employees to foster a safe and positive atmosphere.
  • Conduct regular and thorough patrols of assigned areas on foot, bicycle, or in a vehicle to monitor for safety hazards, potential security issues, and quality-of-life concerns.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by offering assistance, answering questions, providing directions, and sharing information about local services, events, and amenities.
  • Act as a "goodwill ambassador," building positive relationships with local businesses, residents, and visitors to build trust and encourage community cooperation.
  • Calmly and professionally de-escalate verbal conflicts and tense situations, employing proven conflict resolution techniques to ensure the safety of all individuals involved.
  • Act as a first responder to non-emergency incidents, providing immediate assistance and coordinating with security, law enforcement, or emergency medical services as necessary.
  • Observe and document incidents, suspicious activities, and maintenance needs with accuracy and detail, preparing clear and concise daily activity logs and formal incident reports using mobile software.
  • Operate communication equipment, such as two-way radios and smartphones, to maintain constant contact with the dispatch center, team members, and supervisors.
  • Provide safe-walk or escort services for individuals to their vehicles, public transit stops, or other nearby locations upon request, particularly during evening hours.
  • Educate the public on safety best practices, local ordinances, and property rules in a friendly and non-confrontational manner to encourage voluntary compliance.
  • Monitor and manage crowd flow during special events or peak traffic periods to ensure pedestrian safety and accessibility.
  • Collaborate closely with local law enforcement, social outreach teams, and other city agencies to provide a coordinated response to community issues like homelessness and public welfare checks.
  • Assist individuals in distress, including connecting at-risk individuals with appropriate social services and support resources through established protocols.
  • Perform opening and closing procedures for public facilities, parks, or designated areas, ensuring they are secure and ready for public use.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times, upholding the organization's standards and serving as a positive representative of the brand.
  • Check and enforce access control policies in designated zones, verifying credentials and ensuring only authorized individuals enter restricted areas when required.
  • Identify and address minor environmental deficiencies such as graffiti, overflowing trash receptacles, or broken lighting by reporting them through an established work order system.
  • Conduct regular checks of safety equipment, such as emergency call boxes or fire extinguishers, to ensure they are in proper working order.
  • Serve as a key point of contact during emergency situations, directing people to safety and providing clear information as instructed by emergency commanders.
  • Participate actively in ongoing training programs covering topics such as de-escalation, first aid/CPR, cultural sensitivity, and emergency preparedness.

Secondary Functions

  • Support management by gathering data on pedestrian traffic, common inquiries, and recurring safety concerns to inform strategic planning and resource allocation.
  • Contribute to community outreach initiatives and special events aimed at improving public safety awareness and engagement.
  • Assist with the onboarding and peer-to-peer training of new Safety Ambassadors.
  • Provide feedback on patrol routes, operational procedures, and equipment to help improve the effectiveness of the safety program.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • First Aid/CPR/AED Certification: Current certification is often required or must be obtained shortly after hiring.
  • Two-Way Radio Communication: Proficiency in using professional radio etiquette and communication protocols.
  • Incident Reporting Software: Experience with or ability to quickly learn mobile reporting applications and record management systems.
  • De-escalation Techniques: Formal training or certification in non-violent crisis intervention is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of Local Ordinances: Basic understanding of public conduct, trespassing, and quality-of-life laws.
  • Basic Security Procedures: Understanding of observation, patrolling, and access control principles.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).

Preferred Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years of experience in a role requiring significant public interaction.

Preferred: Prior experience in customer service, public safety, loss prevention, security, social services, hospitality, or military service is highly valued. Experience working with diverse or vulnerable populations is a significant asset.
