Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Actively engage with customers on the sales floor, initiating conversations to understand their specific hunting discipline, experience level, and equipment needs.
  • Provide expert, in-depth product knowledge and recommendations across a wide range of categories, including firearms, ammunition, optics, archery equipment, tree stands, blinds, and technical apparel.
  • Guide customers through the entire firearms purchasing process, ensuring strict adherence to all local, state, and federal regulations, including the meticulous completion of ATF Form 4473 and conducting background checks.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor, educating customers on product features, benefits, and proper usage to ensure they make informed purchasing decisions that enhance their safety and success in the field.
  • Drive departmental sales goals by effectively demonstrating product value, upselling relevant accessories, and cross-selling products from adjacent departments like camping or fishing.
  • Proactively build and maintain a loyal customer base by fostering genuine relationships, remembering repeat customers, and providing consistently outstanding service.
  • Stay current with the latest industry trends, new product releases, and changes in hunting regulations to provide the most accurate and relevant information to customers.
  • Handle and showcase firearms and other sensitive equipment safely and responsibly at all times, ensuring a secure environment for both customers and team members.
  • Utilize the Point of Sale (POS) system to efficiently process transactions, manage special orders, process returns, and look up inventory with accuracy.
  • Assist customers with troubleshooting common issues with their gear, offering practical advice and solutions or directing them to specialized services like the gunsmith or archery tech.
  • Communicate the benefits of store loyalty programs, extended warranties, and special financing offers to add value to the customer's purchase.
  • Master the features and benefits of our exclusive and national brands, articulating what makes our product selection unique and superior.
  • Confidently handle customer concerns and complaints with empathy and professionalism, working to find a satisfactory resolution that retains their business.
  • Participate actively in all product training sessions and department meetings to continuously sharpen your sales skills and technical knowledge.
  • Support store-wide initiatives and promotions, actively informing customers about current sales events to maximize sales opportunities.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in merchandising the department, ensuring product displays are visually appealing, fully stocked, and compliant with brand standards.
  • Participate in regular inventory counts and cycle counts to help maintain stock accuracy and minimize shrink.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the hunting department, including sales counters, display cases, and aisles, creating a professional and inviting shopping environment.
  • Help prepare the department for peak seasons by assisting with floor-set changes and the setup of promotional displays.
  • Provide backup support to other departments as needed, demonstrating a collaborative, team-first attitude.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • In-Depth Firearms Knowledge: Strong understanding of various firearm types (rifles, shotguns, handguns), actions, calibers, and their appropriate applications for different game.
  • ATF & State Regulation Compliance: Proven ability to understand and strictly follow all laws and regulations governing the sale of firearms and ammunition.
  • POS System Proficiency: Experience operating retail point-of-sale systems for transactions, inventory lookups, and customer management.
  • Hunting & Outdoor Gear Expertise: Comprehensive knowledge of hunting optics, archery equipment, ammunition, scent control, camouflage, and other related accessories.
  • Sales Techniques: Demonstrable skills in consultative selling, cross-selling, and upselling within a specialty retail environment.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years of experience in a retail, sales, or customer-facing role.

Preferred: Direct experience in selling firearms, archery, or outdoor sporting goods is highly desirable. Personal, in-depth experience as an active hunter can be a significant substitute for direct retail experience.
