Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Proactively engage with customers on the sales floor, building rapport and utilizing expert-level knowledge to identify their specific hunting needs, experience level, and trip requirements.
  • Provide detailed, hands-on demonstrations of firearms, crossbows, compound bows, optics, and other hunting accessories to educate customers and facilitate purchasing decisions.
  • Execute the sale of firearms and ammunition in strict accordance with all federal, state, and local laws, including the meticulous completion of ATF Form 4473 and conducting NICS background checks.
  • Drive departmental sales by up-selling and cross-selling relevant products, such as cleaning kits, cases, ammunition, and optics, to provide a complete solution for the customer.
  • Maintain a deep and current understanding of the features, benefits, and applications of a wide array of hunting and shooting sports products from various manufacturers.
  • Guide customers through the complex process of selecting the appropriate firearm, caliber, and ammunition combination for their intended game and hunting environment.
  • Assist customers with the selection and fitting of archery equipment, including bows, arrows, and broadheads, ensuring proper draw length and weight.
  • Respond to and resolve customer inquiries and issues with a high level of professionalism, ensuring a positive and satisfactory resolution.
  • Maintain impeccable presentation and organization of the firearms counter, display cases, and surrounding hunting department through regular cleaning, zoning, and restocking.
  • Actively participate in generating leads for and promoting in-store events, workshops, and training classes related to hunting and shooting sports.
  • Accurately process transactions, special orders, and layaways using the Point of Sale (POS) system, ensuring all customer and item information is correct.
  • Merchandise new products and adjust displays in accordance with planograms and company standards to create a visually appealing and easy-to-navigate shopping experience.
  • Conduct regular inventory counts and audits within the hunting department to ensure accuracy and prevent loss.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on hunting regulations, season dates, and licensing requirements for local and regional areas to better assist customers.
  • Communicate effectively with department leads and store management regarding customer feedback, product performance, and inventory needs.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures, particularly those concerning the handling and storage of firearms and ammunition.
  • Build a loyal customer base by establishing long-term relationships and becoming their trusted advisor for all future hunting and shooting needs.
  • Uphold the company's brand and image by providing a world-class, friendly, and authentic customer service experience at all times.
  • Assist in the setup and takedown of promotional displays and signage for seasonal events and sales.
  • Continuously expand personal knowledge by attending vendor training, reading industry publications, and engaging with the broader hunting community.
  • Ensure all firearms are properly secured and accounted for at the beginning and end of each shift, following strict opening and closing procedures.
  • Provide expert advice on the use, mounting, and sighting-in of scopes, red dots, and other optical equipment.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with receiving, processing, and stocking of incoming hunting and firearms inventory, ensuring accuracy and proper placement.
  • Participate in regular product training sessions and vendor demonstrations to stay current on the latest industry trends, technologies, and new product releases.
  • Support other departments during peak traffic periods as needed, demonstrating a collaborative team spirit.
  • Contribute to maintaining the overall cleanliness and organization of the store, including back-stock areas.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • In-depth knowledge of modern firearms (rifles, shotguns, handguns), ammunition types, ballistics, and their appropriate applications for various game.
  • Comprehensive understanding of archery equipment, including compound bows, crossbows, arrows, and accessories, with the ability to discuss technical specifications.
  • Strong working knowledge of federal, state, and local firearm sales regulations, including ATF Form 4473 and NICS background check procedures.
  • Proficiency in operating Point of Sale (POS) systems for transaction processing, inventory look-up, and customer order management.
  • Demonstrated expertise in a wide range of hunting disciplines, including big game, waterfowl, turkey, upland, and predator hunting.
  • Familiarity with leading brands and products in the hunting and shooting sports industry (e.g., Leupold, Vortex, Winchester, Remington, Mathews, Hoyt).
  • Ability to properly and safely handle, demonstrate, and secure a wide variety of firearms.
  • Knowledge of optics, including rifle scopes, binoculars, and rangefinders, and the ability to explain concepts like magnification, objective lens size, and reticles.
  • Basic merchandising skills, including the ability to set up product displays and maintain visual standards.
  • Experience with inventory management practices, including cycle counts and stock-level monitoring.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 2+ years of experience in a retail sales environment, preferably in a specialty store focused on hunting, firearms, or outdoor recreation.
  • Must have personal, hands-on experience as an active hunter and/or shooting sports enthusiast.

Preferred:

  • 3-5 years of direct experience selling firearms and hunting equipment.
  • Previous experience in a role requiring adherence to strict regulatory compliance.
