Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Cultivate, manage, and strengthen relationships with a dedicated book of institutional clients, serving as their primary point of contact for all trading-related activities.
  • Execute client orders in a timely and efficient manner across various asset classes, such as equities, options, fixed income, or derivatives, while ensuring best execution.
  • Provide clients with insightful, real-time market color, commentary, and analysis on market trends, liquidity, and breaking news.
  • Proactively generate and communicate actionable, alpha-generating trade ideas tailored to client mandates and market conditions.
  • Manage the entire lifecycle of a client's order, from initial receipt and entry into the Order Management System (OMS) to final settlement, ensuring accuracy and resolving any issues.
  • Monitor market risk, position limits, and counterparty exposure related to your trading book and client activities.
  • Provide competitive pricing and liquidity for various financial instruments by leveraging internal capital and accessing external liquidity pools.
  • Collaborate closely with research, institutional sales, and other trading desks to deliver the full resources of the firm to your clients.
  • Actively prospect and onboard new institutional clients to grow the firm's market share and the desk's revenue.
  • Maintain an expert-level understanding of market structure, including dark pools, exchanges, and algorithmic trading strategies.
  • Relay client feedback and market intelligence back to internal teams to help refine the firm’s products, services, and trading technology.
  • Adhere strictly to all industry regulations (e.g., FINRA, SEC) and internal compliance policies to maintain the highest ethical standards.
  • Master the firm’s trading platforms, analytics tools, and OMS/EMS systems to provide seamless client service and execution.
  • Analyze client trading patterns and performance to provide consultative feedback and identify opportunities for improved execution quality.
  • Arrange and participate in corporate access events, analyst marketing, and client entertainment to deepen client engagement.
  • Stay informed on macroeconomic events, geopolitical developments, and sector-specific news that could impact client portfolios and market dynamics.
  • Manage and troubleshoot any trade breaks, settlement issues, or allocation discrepancies with a sense of urgency and professionalism.
  • Market the firm's research, capital markets transactions (IPOs, secondaries), and other products to your client base.
  • Prepare and deliver post-trade analysis and performance reports to clients, demonstrating the value of your execution services.
  • Continuously monitor P&L for your client book and take ownership of its commercial success.
  • Demonstrate expertise in specific trading strategies, such as block trading, pairs trading, or using complex derivatives to achieve client objectives.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in the preparation and customization of marketing materials and client-facing presentations.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of trading workflows, platform technologies, and execution algorithms.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior members of the sales and trading team, fostering a collaborative environment.
  • Participate in firm-wide strategy meetings to provide direct insights on market sentiment, client flow, and competitive landscape.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Trading Platform Proficiency: Expert-level ability to use trading and market data systems such as Bloomberg Terminal, Refinitiv Eikon, FactSet, and various EMS/OMS platforms.
  • Asset Class Expertise: Deep knowledge in one or more asset classes (e.g., US Equities, Options, Fixed Income, FX, Structured Products).
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Active FINRA Series 7, 63, and 57 (or 55) licenses are typically required.
  • Quantitative & Analytical Skills: Strong numerical ability to quickly calculate trades, analyze market data, and understand complex financial instruments.
  • Market Structure Acumen: Comprehensive understanding of electronic trading, liquidity sourcing, and best execution principles.
  • Advanced Excel/VBA: Skill in using Excel for data analysis, P&L tracking, and building simple models.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 3-10+ years of direct experience in a sales trading, trading, or institutional sales role within capital markets.

  • Verifiable revenue generation and a transferable book of business are highly advantageous for senior roles.
