Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Skillfully set up, calibrate, and operate a variety of industrial saws, including horizontal and vertical band saws, CNC saws, cold saws, and miter saws, based on job specifications.
  • Accurately interpret and work from engineering blueprints, work orders, cutting lists, and complex technical drawings to determine cutting requirements.
  • Select the appropriate saw blades, cutting speeds, and feed rates for different types of materials (e.g., carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, alloys) and thicknesses.
  • Perform first-piece and in-process quality inspections using precision measuring instruments like tape measures, calipers, micrometers, and protractors to ensure parts meet strict tolerance requirements.
  • Make necessary adjustments to machine settings, including blade tension, guides, and angles, to maintain cut quality and dimensional accuracy throughout production runs.
  • Meticulously monitor machine operations for any signs of malfunction, unusual noises, or deviations, and take immediate corrective action to prevent defects or damage.
  • Execute routine and preventative maintenance on sawing equipment, which includes cleaning machines, lubricating parts, and changing blades to ensure operational readiness and extend equipment life.
  • Safely operate material handling equipment, such as forklifts, overhead cranes, and pallet jacks, to load raw materials onto the saw and move finished parts to the next production stage.
  • Maintain an organized and clean work area, adhering to 5S principles and ensuring all tools, materials, and equipment are stored properly.
  • Diligently complete all required production and quality control documentation, including logging job times, material usage, and inspection results with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Identify, tag, and segregate non-conforming parts or materials according to company quality procedures and report issues to a supervisor.
  • Systematically de-burr, grind, or finish cut pieces as required to remove sharp edges and prepare them for subsequent manufacturing processes.
  • Maximize material yield by planning efficient cutting layouts to minimize scrap and waste, contributing to cost-saving initiatives.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety policies, procedures, and OSHA regulations, including the consistent use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Troubleshoot minor operational problems with the saw and perform basic repairs, escalating more complex maintenance issues to the maintenance department.
  • Manage and organize raw material inventory within the immediate work cell, ensuring proper identification and traceability of different stock types.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, team leads, and colleagues in other departments to coordinate production schedules and ensure a smooth workflow.
  • Bundle, stack, and label finished parts clearly and correctly for easy identification and transport to the next manufacturing station.
  • Participate actively in continuous improvement programs by providing suggestions for enhancing safety, quality, and productivity in the sawing department.
  • Train and mentor junior operators or new team members on standard operating procedures, safety protocols, and quality standards.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with inventory cycle counts and material tracking to support accurate stock management.
  • Provide valuable feedback on process improvements and contribute to the company's lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
