Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop, maintain, and own the master production schedule (MPS) to align with sales forecasts, inventory targets, and customer orders while optimizing plant efficiency and capacity.
  • Analyze production specifications, plant capacity data, and process flow to determine and allocate necessary manufacturing resources, including labor, equipment, and tooling.
  • Lead a team of schedulers and planners, providing direct oversight, mentorship, training, and performance management to build a high-performing scheduling function.
  • Act as the central communication hub, collaborating closely with Production, Procurement, Sales, and Logistics departments to ensure cross-functional alignment on scheduling priorities.
  • Proactively identify potential scheduling conflicts, resource constraints, and material shortages, and spearhead collaborative problem-solving efforts to mitigate risks and prevent production delays.
  • Monitor real-time production progress against the established schedule, generating and presenting regular performance reports, variance analyses, and status updates to senior leadership.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for the organization's ERP/MRP system and advanced planning software, ensuring data integrity and leveraging system capabilities for optimal scheduling.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the planning and scheduling processes, implementing best practices like Lean manufacturing to enhance efficiency, reduce lead times, and lower costs.
  • Manage and communicate all schedule changes effectively and promptly to relevant stakeholders, ensuring a smooth transition and minimal disruption to operational workflow.
  • Balance and manage finished goods and work-in-progress (WIP) inventory levels by coordinating production schedules with inventory control policies to prevent overstocking or stockouts.
  • Conduct robust "what-if" scenario analyses to evaluate the operational and financial impact of potential changes in demand, capacity, or supply chain disruptions.
  • Establish, track, and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) for scheduling effectiveness, such as Schedule Attainment, On-Time Delivery (OTD), and Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).
  • Coordinate with Maintenance and Engineering teams to strategically schedule planned equipment downtime for preventative maintenance, minimizing impact on production output.
  • Facilitate daily or weekly production planning meetings, creating a forum for cross-functional teams to review performance, align on priorities, and proactively address challenges.
  • Manage the detailed allocation and scheduling of labor resources, taking into account skill sets, certifications, availability, and labor regulations to ensure compliant and effective coverage.
  • Prepare and maintain long-range production plans and capacity models based on strategic business objectives and sales forecasts to guide future capital and resource investments.
  • Evaluate and recommend new scheduling technologies, software, or process improvements to enhance the accuracy, agility, and efficiency of the entire planning function.
  • Investigate root causes of schedule deviations and missed targets, implementing durable corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Ensure all scheduling and production planning activities are in full compliance with company policies, quality standards, and any relevant industry or safety regulations.
  • Function as the primary point of contact and ultimate owner for all scheduling-related matters, providing decisive and effective solutions to complex operational puzzles.

Secondary Functions

  • Support the Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) process by providing critical data-driven insights on production capabilities, capacity constraints, and lead times.
  • Contribute to departmental and operational budget development by providing accurate forecasts on labor hours, equipment usage, and potential overtime requirements.
  • Collaborate with New Product Introduction (NPI) and R&D teams to effectively plan and schedule pilot runs and initial production builds for new products.
  • Actively participate in and champion continuous improvement events (e.g., Kaizen, Value Stream Mapping), offering a scheduling and planning perspective to streamline end-to-end workflows.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • ERP/MRP Proficiency: Deep expertise in using Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems (e.g., SAP S/4HANA, Oracle NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics 365) for planning and execution.
  • Advanced Planning Systems (APS): Hands-on experience with Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS) software and tools for complex modeling and optimization.
  • Data Analysis & Forecasting: Strong capability in data analysis, statistical forecasting, and reporting using tools like advanced Microsoft Excel (PivotTables, Power Query, Macros), Tableau, or Power BI.
  • Production Planning Methodologies: Thorough understanding and practical application of production planning and control methods such as MRP II, Just-in-Time (JIT), Kanban, and Theory of Constraints.
  • Capacity & Resource Planning: Proven ability to perform detailed capacity analysis (RCCP, CRP) and effectively plan for labor, machinery, and material resources.
  • Supply Chain Acumen: Solid knowledge of end-to-end supply chain management principles, including inventory management, logistics, and procurement.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.

Preferred Education:

  • Master's Degree (MBA or MS) or relevant professional certification (e.g., APICS CPIM, CSCP).

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 5-8 years of progressive experience in scheduling, production planning, or supply chain management, including at least 2-3 years in a supervisory or leadership capacity.

Preferred: Experience within a complex manufacturing (discrete or process), logistics, construction, or project-based environment is highly desirable. Proven success in a role with direct responsibility for a master schedule is a strong plus.
