Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Perform a comprehensive range of routine cleaning tasks, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and dusting in classrooms, offices, hallways, libraries, and gymnasiums to maintain a high standard of cleanliness.
- Thoroughly clean and sanitize all restroom facilities and fixtures, ensuring they are hygienic and fully stocked with supplies such as toilet paper, paper towels, and soap.
- Gather, transport, and properly dispose of trash, recycling, and other waste materials from all areas of the school building and grounds according to established health and safety procedures.
- Operate and maintain a variety of industrial cleaning equipment, such as automatic floor scrubbers, high-speed buffers, carpet extractors, and pressure washers, ensuring they are in safe working order.
- Execute scheduled floor care maintenance, which includes stripping, sealing, waxing, and buffing hard-surface floors, as well as shampooing and spot-cleaning carpets to preserve their appearance and longevity.
- Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces throughout the school daily, including doorknobs, light switches, handrails, and drinking fountains, to mitigate the spread of germs and illness.
- Respond promptly and professionally to immediate cleaning needs and emergencies, such as spills, bodily fluid clean-ups, and overflowing plumbing, strictly following all safety and health protocols.
- Secure the school facilities at the end of the designated shift by locking all doors and windows, checking for unauthorized personnel, and ensuring all non-essential lights are turned off and alarm systems are activated.
- Clean interior and exterior windows, glass partitions, and mirrors to ensure a clear and presentable appearance.
- Monitor building security and safety by performing regular walkthroughs, identifying and reporting potential safety hazards, maintenance issues, or signs of vandalism to the appropriate supervisor.
Secondary Functions
- Set up and break down furniture, stages, and equipment for school activities, meetings, and special events, such as assemblies, sporting events, and parent-teacher conferences.
- Perform seasonal groundskeeping duties as required, including snow and ice removal from sidewalks and entryways to ensure safe access, and clearing leaves or debris from school perimeters.
- Conduct minor, routine maintenance and repair tasks, such as changing light bulbs, tightening loose furniture, repairing leaky faucets, unclogging drains, and performing minor paint touch-ups.
- Maintain an accurate inventory of cleaning chemicals, janitorial supplies, and paper products, and prepare and submit requisitions for new supplies to the supervisor in a timely manner.
- Ensure that all cleaning chemicals are stored, mixed, and used safely and correctly in accordance with manufacturer instructions and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
- Inspect the facility, including playground equipment and athletic fields, to identify any necessary repairs, safety hazards, or areas needing cleaning attention, and report findings.
- Assist in the distribution of school supplies, packages, and inter-office mail throughout the school building as needed.
- Properly raise and lower the national and state flags at the beginning and end of the school day in accordance with proper flag etiquette.
- Maintain custodial closets and storage areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition, ensuring equipment and supplies are readily accessible.
- Collaborate and communicate effectively with teachers, administrators, and other school staff to coordinate cleaning schedules and address specific facility needs or concerns.
