Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop and maintain a diverse, inclusive, and curriculum-aligned collection of print and digital resources through strategic selection, acquisition, cataloging, and deselection processes.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers as an instructional partner to co-plan, co-teach, and assess inquiry-based learning projects that integrate information literacy and technology skills.
  • Provide direct instruction to students, individually and in groups, on research methodologies, database navigation, source evaluation, and proper citation practices.
  • Foster a lifelong love of reading and learning by implementing engaging school-wide literacy initiatives, book clubs, author visits, and reading promotion events.
  • Manage the library's physical and digital spaces to create a welcoming, flexible, and student-centered environment that facilitates individual study, collaboration, and innovation.
  • Administer the library's integrated library system (ILS), such as Follett Destiny, to manage circulation, inventory, and patron records effectively.
  • Champion digital citizenship and media literacy by developing and teaching lessons on topics such as online safety, intellectual property, cyberbullying, and identifying misinformation.
  • Provide professional development and instructional support to faculty and staff on new educational technologies, digital resources, and research strategies.
  • Curate and manage access to a wide array of online subscription databases, e-books, and other digital content, ensuring equitable access for the entire school community.
  • Assist students and faculty with locating and utilizing information resources for academic assignments, personal interests, and professional growth.
  • Create and maintain the library's website or learning management system (LMS) page as a central hub for accessing digital resources, research guides, and program information.
  • Promote library services, resources, and events to students, staff, and parents through newsletters, social media, and other communication channels.
  • Troubleshoot basic hardware, software, and network connectivity issues related to library computers, printers, and other technology equipment.

Secondary Functions

  • Prepare and manage the annual library budget, including allocating funds for resources, technology, supplies, and programming in alignment with school goals.
  • Compile and analyze circulation statistics, program attendance, and other data to evaluate the effectiveness of the library program and inform strategic planning.
  • Supervise and train library support staff, parent volunteers, and student aides to ensure the smooth operation of daily library functions.
  • Participate actively in school and district-level committees, such as curriculum, technology, and literacy teams, to advocate for the library program.
  • Pursue ongoing professional development to stay current with emerging trends in library science, educational technology, and instructional best practices.
  • Establish and maintain effective partnerships with the local public library and other community organizations to expand learning opportunities for students.
  • Oversee the scheduling of library spaces and resources to accommodate classes, meetings, and special events.
  • Ensure the library program operates in compliance with copyright laws, fair use guidelines, and student data privacy regulations (e.g., CIPA, FERPA).

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Library Management Systems (LMS/ILS): Proficiency with systems like Follett Destiny, SirsiDynix, or similar platforms for circulation, cataloging, and inventory.
  • Database Navigation: Expertise in using and teaching academic and K-12 databases such as EBSCO, ProQuest, Gale, JSTOR, and World Book Online.
  • Digital Curation: Skill in using tools like LibGuides, Wakelet, or Google Sites to create and organize digital content and research guides.
  • Cataloging & Metadata: Working knowledge of cataloging standards (MARC, RDA) and metadata principles for organizing physical and digital resources.
  • Educational Technology: Competency with a range of classroom technologies, including Google Workspace for Education, Microsoft 365, learning management systems (e.g., Canvas, Schoology), and interactive tools.
  • Information Literacy Frameworks: Deep understanding and ability to apply standards such as the AASL Standards Framework for Learners.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • State-specific teaching or school librarian certification/endorsement (or eligibility to obtain one).

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS, MLS) from a program accredited by the American Library Association (ALA), often with a specialization in School Library Media.
