Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Architect, design, and develop comprehensive and insightful Tableau dashboards and workbooks to meet and exceed business requirements.
  • Translate complex business questions and stakeholder needs into technical specifications and elegant data visualization solutions.
  • Write, optimize, and maintain complex SQL queries to extract, manipulate, and prepare data for analysis from various database systems like SQL Server, Redshift, and Snowflake.
  • Lead the full development lifecycle for BI solutions, from initial gathering of requirements through to design, development, testing, deployment, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Engage directly with cross-functional teams, including Marketing, Sales, Finance, and Operations, to understand their data needs and deliver tailored analytical tools.
  • Champion data visualization best practices and design principles to ensure dashboards are not only accurate but also intuitive, user-friendly, and impactful.
  • Perform in-depth data analysis and exploratory deep dives to identify key trends, anomalies, and actionable insights that drive strategic initiatives.
  • Manage and administer the Tableau Server or Tableau Cloud environment, including user permissions, site management, content publishing, and security protocols.
  • Conduct rigorous performance tuning of Tableau workbooks and data sources to ensure dashboards are fast, responsive, and efficient, even with large datasets.
  • Develop and implement robust data validation and quality assurance processes to maintain the accuracy and integrity of all reporting and analytics.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation for all developed dashboards, data sources, and business logic to ensure knowledge transfer.
  • Provide expert-level training and ongoing support to business users, empowering them to effectively use Tableau for self-service analytics and data exploration.
  • Collaborate closely with Data Engineering teams to define data requirements and ensure the data warehouse and ETL processes support BI needs.
  • Automate the creation and distribution of recurring reports and performance scorecards to streamline information delivery across the organization.
  • Integrate a wide array of disparate data sources, including relational databases, flat files, and cloud-based data, into cohesive and unified Tableau data models.
  • Develop and utilize advanced Tableau features such as calculated fields, level-of-detail (LOD) expressions, parameters, sets, and actions to create sophisticated and interactive analytics.
  • Present analytical findings and dashboard walkthroughs to senior leadership and key stakeholders in a clear and compelling manner, effectively telling the story behind the data.
  • Proactively monitor dashboard usage and user feedback to identify opportunities for continuous improvement and enhancement of existing BI assets.
  • Stay current with the latest Tableau features, industry trends, and emerging technologies in the data visualization and business intelligence space.
  • Support data governance initiatives by helping to define and enforce standards for data definitions, metrics, and KPIs across the enterprise.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Tableau Desktop & Prep: Expert-level proficiency in developing complex dashboards, mastering features like LOD expressions, parameters, and actions, and using Tableau Prep for data cleansing and shaping.
  • Advanced SQL: The ability to write complex, highly-optimized SQL queries to join and manipulate large, diverse datasets from multiple sources.
  • Data Warehousing Concepts: Strong understanding of data warehouse architecture (e.g., star schema, snowflake schema), ETL/ELT processes, and data modeling principles.
  • Database Technologies: Hands-on experience with relational databases (e.g., SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL) and familiarity with cloud data warehouses (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift).
