Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Operate heavy paving equipment such as asphalt pavers, rollers, and compactors to proficiently spread, compact, and level hot mix asphalt on various surfaces.
- Prepare job sites for paving operations, which includes cleaning and sweeping surfaces, applying tack coats, and verifying the base course is properly graded and compacted.
- Execute precise raking and shoveling of asphalt to achieve specified depths, grades, and a smooth finish, particularly around joints, manholes, edges, and drainage systems.
- Perform skilled hand-finishing work using lutes, shovels, and other specialized tools to correct imperfections and ensure a seamless, high-quality surface.
- Diligently monitor the temperature of the hot mix asphalt to ensure it remains within the optimal range for application and compaction, reporting any deviations immediately.
- Read and interpret detailed site plans, blueprints, and grade stakes to ensure a new surface is laid according to design specifications, elevations, and cross-fall.
- Conduct asphalt patching and repair work, including cutting out damaged sections, preparing the sub-base, and applying new asphalt to remediate potholes, alligator cracking, and other defects.
- Install and finish pavement joints and edges meticulously to prevent water ingress and ensure the long-term durability and performance of the road surface.
- Implement and maintain comprehensive traffic control plans, including the strategic setup of cones, barriers, and signage to ensure the safety of the crew and the general public.
⚫ Perform routine pre-start checks, daily cleaning, and minor preventative maintenance on all paving equipment to ensure operational readiness, safety, and longevity. - Collaborate effectively with the entire paving crew, including machine operators, truck drivers, and ground personnel, to maintain a smooth, safe, and efficient workflow.
- Adhere strictly to all company and legislative health and safety regulations (e.g., OSHA, COSHH) on site, wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Assist in the calculation of asphalt quantities required for specific jobs to minimize waste, manage costs, and ensure project efficiency.
- Guide dump trucks safely when backing up to the paver, ensuring a consistent and safe transfer of hot mix asphalt into the paver hopper without spillage.
- Operate small plant machinery, such as plate compactors or pedestrian rollers, for finishing work in tight, confined, or inaccessible areas.
- Perform continuous quality control checks throughout the paving process, measuring surface evenness, density, and depth to meet or exceed project standards.
- Manage the application of sealants, rejuvenators, and other surface treatments designed to protect and extend the life of the finished asphalt pavement.
- Document daily work activities, including hours worked, materials used, and equipment operated, for project records, payroll, and client reporting.
- Actively participate in daily toolbox talks and safety meetings to stay informed about site-specific hazards and safe work procedures.
- Ensure the worksite is left in a clean, safe, and tidy condition upon project completion, including the proper disposal of all waste materials.
- Troubleshoot and resolve minor operational issues with paving equipment or application processes on-site to prevent project delays and maintain quality.
- Communicate clearly with site supervisors and engineers regarding project progress, on-site challenges, and any necessary deviations from the original plan.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in training new or less experienced crew members on proper paving techniques, equipment operation, and safety protocols.
- Participate in the loading and unloading of equipment and materials at the beginning and end of each workday.
- Provide support to other groundworks activities on site as required, such as drainage or kerbing installation.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of paving processes and safety standards within the team and wider organization.
