Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Diligently prepare complex federal, state, and local income tax returns for a diverse client base, including individuals, C-corporations, S-corporations, partnerships, and trusts.
  • Conduct detailed reviews of client financial data, including trial balances and general ledgers, to identify potential tax issues and ensure accurate reporting for compliance purposes.
  • Perform technical tax research on a variety of federal, state, and international tax matters, effectively utilizing tax research software like CCH, BNA, and RIA Checkpoint.
  • Draft comprehensive memoranda and other written correspondence to document research findings and communicate complex tax concepts to clients and senior engagement team members.
  • Assist in the preparation of quarterly and year-end income tax provisions under ASC 740, including the calculation of current and deferred tax expenses and related financial statement disclosures.
  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of tax law changes and their impact on clients, proactively identifying planning opportunities and potential compliance risks.
  • Respond to inquiries and notices from various tax authorities, including the IRS and state departments of revenue, assisting with the resolution of tax disputes under supervision.
  • Support senior staff and managers during tax planning engagements, which includes modeling the tax implications of proposed business transactions and strategies.
  • Maintain and meticulously reconcile tax basis balance sheets and calculate deferred tax assets and liabilities to ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards.
  • Prepare detailed, organized workpapers and supporting documentation that clearly articulate the basis for tax positions taken on returns and provisions, facilitating efficient review.
  • Cultivate strong client relationships by providing timely, professional service and demonstrating a clear understanding of their business operations and specific tax needs.
  • Utilize advanced Microsoft Excel functions and industry-standard tax preparation software (e.g., CCH Axcess, GoSystem, ProSystem fx Tax) to streamline workflows and enhance efficiency.
  • Participate in client meetings alongside senior team members to discuss tax strategies, compliance status, and emerging planning opportunities.
  • Ensure all tax compliance deadlines are meticulously tracked and met, demonstrating an ability to manage multiple engagements and priorities simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Assist with federal and state tax audits by gathering necessary information, preparing schedules, and responding to auditor requests under the guidance of senior management.
  • Prepare and file extensions and quarterly estimated tax payments for an assigned portfolio of clients, ensuring adequate and timely funding to avoid penalties.
  • Engage in continuous professional development and firm-sponsored training to stay current on evolving tax legislation, regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Collaborate effectively with other service lines within the firm, such as audit and advisory, to provide integrated and comprehensive client service on shared engagements.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement within the tax department and contribute to the implementation of new technologies and best practices to drive efficiency.
  • Mentor and provide constructive guidance to interns and new staff members, assisting in their professional growth and acclimation to the team and firm culture.

  • Assist senior staff and management with special tax projects, such as cost segregation studies, R&D tax credit analyses, and M&A due diligence.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Tax Return Preparation: Proficiency in preparing a range of tax forms, including 1040, 1120, 1120S, and 1065.
  • Tax Research: Ability to use research platforms like CCH, BNA, and RIA Checkpoint to investigate and resolve complex tax questions.
  • Income Tax Provision (ASC 740): Foundational knowledge of accounting for income taxes in financial statements.
  • Tax Software Proficiency: Hands-on experience with tax compliance software such as CCH Axcess, ProSystem fx, or GoSystem.
