Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Drive the strategic growth and profitability of the tax practice by originating new client relationships and developing a robust pipeline of new business opportunities.
  • Serve as the primary engagement partner for a dedicated portfolio of the firm's most significant clients, including multinational corporations, private equity funds, and high-net-worth family offices.
  • Lead the development and execution of sophisticated tax planning strategies for clients, addressing complex issues in areas such as M&A, international tax, corporate restructuring, and succession planning.
  • Provide the ultimate review and sign-off on high-stakes tax compliance and consulting projects, ensuring technical accuracy, risk mitigation, and the highest standards of quality.
  • Act as the firm's senior subject matter expert, providing authoritative guidance on intricate domestic and international tax laws, regulations, and emerging industry trends.
  • Cultivate deep, long-lasting relationships with C-suite executives, boards of directors, and key client stakeholders, becoming their go-to trusted business advisor.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of tax professionals, including directors, managers, and staff, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous professional growth.
  • Champion and manage the financial performance of the practice, including overseeing budgeting, billing, pricing strategies, and collection efforts to ensure revenue and profitability targets are met.
  • Actively manage practice risk by implementing and adhering to firm policies, professional standards, and quality control procedures on all engagements.
  • Represent the firm as a thought leader in the marketplace by speaking at industry conferences, publishing articles, and engaging with professional organizations.
  • Negotiate the scope, fees, and terms of complex engagement letters and master service agreements with new and existing clients.
  • Collaborate seamlessly with partners in other service lines (Audit, Advisory, Legal) to deliver integrated, holistic solutions and drive cross-selling opportunities.
  • Spearhead the recruitment, retention, and career development initiatives for the tax department, ensuring a strong talent pipeline to support future growth.
  • Provide expert tax due diligence and advisory services for clients involved in mergers, acquisitions, dispositions, and other significant capital transactions.
  • Guide clients through complex IRS examinations, tax controversies, and appeals, formulating strategies to achieve favorable outcomes.
  • Oversee the implementation of new tax technologies and digital tools to enhance efficiency, automate processes, and improve the client service experience.
  • Develop and maintain a strong network of external contacts, including bankers, attorneys, and other professionals, to generate referrals and collaborative opportunities.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • CPA License or JD: Active and in good standing is mandatory.
  • Advanced Tax Law Knowledge: Mastery of the Internal Revenue Code, regulations, and case law, particularly in corporate (Sub C/Sub S), partnership (Sub K), and individual taxation.
  • M&A Tax Expertise: Deep experience in tax due diligence, deal structuring, integration, and tax modeling for corporate transactions.
  • International Tax & Transfer Pricing: Proficient in advising on cross-border transactions, foreign tax credits, tax treaties, and global structuring.
  • ASC 740 (Accounting for Income Taxes): Expertise in complex income tax provisions, deferred taxes, and uncertain tax positions for public and private companies.
  • State and Local Tax (SALT): Comprehensive understanding of multi-state tax issues, including nexus, apportionment, and tax controversy.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 15+ years of progressive experience in public accounting or a related professional services environment.

Preferred: Demonstrable experience as a Tax Director or Senior Manager within a reputable public accounting firm. A proven track record of successfully managing a team, providing ultimate sign-off on complex returns, and building a significant book of business is essential.
