Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Reinforce learning concepts by providing one-on-one and small group instruction to students, using materials prepared by the lead teacher to supplement classroom lessons.
  • Actively assist the lead teacher in implementing daily lesson plans and educational activities, ensuring materials are prepared and the classroom is set up for student success.
  • Monitor student behavior across all school settings (classroom, hallways, cafeteria, playground) and proactively apply positive behavior management techniques to maintain a safe and orderly environment.
  • Provide direct support and accommodations for students with special needs, collaborating with special education staff to implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Observe and document student academic performance, behavioral patterns, and social interactions, providing the lead teacher with valuable insights for progress reports and parent-teacher conferences.
  • Supervise students during non-instructional times, including arrival, dismissal, lunch periods, and recess, ensuring their safety and encouraging positive social interactions.
  • Assist in the administration and proctoring of tests, quizzes, and other assessments, maintaining a quiet and secure testing environment for all students.
  • Guide students in developing essential life skills, such as self-care, social etiquette, and organizational habits, through modeling and direct instruction.
  • Facilitate student use of classroom technology, including computers, tablets, and educational software, troubleshooting minor technical issues as they arise.
  • Lead small group activities, such as reading circles or math games, to differentiate instruction and provide targeted support based on student needs.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with students, parents, and staff under the guidance of the lead teacher, serving as a positive point of contact.
  • Chaperone students on school-sponsored field trips, ensuring their safety and helping to facilitate the educational objectives of the outing.
  • Step in to lead the class for short periods in the teacher's absence, following pre-established plans to maintain continuity of instruction.

Secondary Functions

  • Prepare, organize, and distribute a wide range of instructional materials, including photocopying worksheets, laminating documents, and assembling learning packets.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and stimulating classroom environment by tidying up learning centers, organizing supplies, and creating/updating bulletin board displays.
  • Perform essential clerical and administrative duties, such as taking daily attendance, recording grades in the grade book, and managing student files.
  • Assist in the setup and teardown of the classroom at the beginning and end of the school year, including organizing furniture, supplies, and educational resources.
  • Participate actively in staff meetings, professional development workshops, and training sessions to stay current with best practices in education and school policies.
  • Manage classroom inventory, monitoring the stock of supplies like paper, art materials, and books, and notifying the teacher when reordering is necessary.
  • Support the health and wellness of students by assisting with basic first aid for minor injuries (scrapes, bumps) and ensuring students with health plans receive proper care as directed.
  • Uphold and enforce all school policies, procedures, and safety regulations consistently to ensure a secure learning environment for all.
  • Collaborate with other teacher assistants and support staff to coordinate school-wide activities and ensure a cohesive approach to student supervision and support.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency with educational technology platforms (e.g., Google Classroom, Seesaw, ClassDojo).
  • Competency in using basic office software (Microsoft Office, Google Workspace) for record-keeping and material creation.
  • First Aid and CPR certification (often required or strongly preferred).
  • Knowledge of basic child development stages and learning theories.
  • Experience with assistive technology for students with disabilities.
  • Familiarity with classroom management software and student information systems.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED. An Associate's degree or completion of at least two years of college coursework is often required.
