Primary Functions

A Technical Animator's day-to-day is a dynamic mix of artistic support, technical development, and problem-solving. You are the go-to expert for making characters move beautifully and efficiently.

  • Design, create, test, and maintain high-quality character, weapon, and vehicle rigs that are both robust and intuitive for animators to use.
  • Develop and implement advanced character deformation setups, including intricate skin weighting, corrective blendshapes/morph targets, and muscle systems to achieve lifelike movement.
  • Author and meticulously support the entire animation pipeline, from content creation in software like Maya or Blender through to seamless integration in game engines like Unreal or Unity.
  • Create and maintain a library of custom tools and scripts, primarily using Python or MEL, to automate repetitive tasks and significantly boost the efficiency of the animation team.
  • Integrate, validate, and rigorously troubleshoot skeletal meshes and animation assets within the game engine, ensuring they function as intended across all gameplay scenarios.
  • Serve as the primary technical support for the animation team, proactively identifying their needs, resolving complex technical hurdles, and providing hands-on assistance.
  • Collaborate closely with gameplay and engine programmers to define, prototype, and implement new runtime animation systems, features, and character locomotion logic.
  • Develop and manage dynamic, physics-based secondary animation systems for elements like cloth, hair, and accessories to add a layer of realistic, overlapping motion.
  • Actively research, evaluate, and champion new industry techniques and technologies for character rigging, deformation, and procedural animation to keep the studio on the cutting edge.
  • Profile, analyze, and relentlessly optimize animation assets and runtime performance to meet strict frame-rate and memory budgets, especially for console and mobile platforms.
  • Author and maintain clear, comprehensive documentation for proprietary tools, pipeline procedures, and established best practices to empower the entire art team.
  • Rig and skin complex non-character assets, such as monstrous creatures with unique anatomy, transforming vehicles, and interactive environmental props.
  • Implement, refine, and debug animation state machines, blend trees, and control rigs directly within the game engine to govern character behavior.
  • Provide critical, constructive feedback on 3D character models during their creation phase to ensure they are optimized for rigging and will deform correctly.
  • Tackle and resolve challenging, often high-pressure technical issues related to bugs in character animation, deformation, and physics simulations during production.
  • Oversee and streamline the export/import process for all animation-related assets, including skeletal meshes, animations, and morph targets, ensuring data integrity.
  • Implement and support sophisticated facial animation and lip-sync systems, whether they are blendshape-based, bone-based, or a hybrid of both.
  • Develop and integrate procedural animation solutions (e.g., for foot placement with IK, character leaning, or ambient motion) to enhance realism and reduce animator workload.
  • Mentor junior artists and animators, sharing your expertise on technical best practices, engine-specific workflows, and the efficient use of pipeline tools.
  • Establish and enforce technical standards and naming conventions for character setup and animation asset management to maintain a clean and organized project.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide ad-hoc technical support and troubleshooting for the animation team during critical production phases and milestone pushes.
  • Contribute to the studio's long-term technical art and animation strategy by evaluating new software, engine features, and workflow paradigms.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Character Art, Design, and QA, to ensure animation functionality meets all project requirements and quality bars.
  • Participate in production planning, sprint reviews, and team retrospectives to represent the technical needs and dependencies of the animation department.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expert Rigging & Skinning: Deep, practical knowledge of character kinematics, deformation, and control structures in software like Maya, 3ds Max, or Blender.
  • Scripting & Automation: Strong proficiency in scripting languages, especially Python. Knowledge of MEL, C#, or C++ is a significant advantage.
  • Game Engine Proficiency: Hands-on experience with Unreal Engine (Animation Blueprints, Control Rig) and/or Unity (Mecanim, Animation C#), including setting up complex animation graphs.
  • Anatomical Knowledge: A solid understanding of human and animal anatomy and biomechanics to inform the creation of believable rigs and deformations.
  • Problem-Solving: The ability to deconstruct complex technical and artistic problems, and devise elegant, efficient solutions.
  • Performance Optimization: Experience using profiling tools to identify and resolve animation-related performance bottlenecks in a game engine.
  • DCC Software Mastery: Advanced-level skills in at least one major 3D content creation package (Maya is the industry standard).
  • Mathematics for 3D: A practical understanding of linear algebra and trigonometry as they apply to 3D transformations, rotations, and vector math.
  • Version Control: Familiarity with version control systems like Perforce or Git is essential for working in a collaborative team environment.
  • Physics Simulation: Experience setting up and tuning real-time physics systems like ragdolls, cloth, and soft bodies.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent, demonstrated professional experience and a strong portfolio.

Preferred Education:

A Bachelor's or Master's degree in a technical art or computer science-related field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

3-7+ years of professional experience as a Technical Animator or in a similar technical art role within the game development, VFX, or animation industry. A portfolio showcasing rigging, scripting, and in-engine work is a must.

Preferred:

Experience having shipped at least one or more AA/AAA titles on console or PC in a technical animation capacity.
