Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Lead and manage all aspects of technical fit sessions on live models or dress forms, accurately identifying fit issues and articulating clear, actionable solutions for pattern, construction, and measurement corrections.
- Develop, maintain, and manage highly detailed and accurate technical specification packages (tech packs) from initial concept through to final production, including construction diagrams, bills of materials (BOM), measurement charts, and finishing details.
- Analyze and evaluate all garment samples (from prototype and fit samples to pre-production and top-of-production) for precise fit, consistent sizing, correct construction, and adherence to the original design intent.
- Establish, document, and consistently enforce brand-specific fit standards, grade rules, and core construction methodologies to ensure product consistency and quality across all seasons and product categories.
- Serve as the primary technical liaison, communicating daily with overseas and domestic vendors, factories, and agents, providing clear, concise, and timely feedback through written comments, digital photo annotations, and pattern corrections.
- Collaborate proactively with the Design team during the initial sketching and concept phase to provide expert technical guidance on garment construction, material suitability, and overall feasibility to mitigate potential production challenges.
- Create and manage a comprehensive library of block patterns and develop new base fits for various product categories, serving as a foundation for seasonal design development and ensuring brand fit consistency.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex fit, pattern, and construction issues with a high degree of technical expertise, proposing innovative and effective solutions to maintain production timelines and quality standards.
- Review, approve, and provide critical feedback on graded pattern nests to ensure that fit integrity and aesthetic proportions are maintained across the full-size range, from the smallest to the largest size.
- Manage the product development calendar for all technical-related milestones, ensuring that sample review deadlines, tech pack handoffs, and final approvals are met to support on-time production delivery.
- Create precise digital technical sketches and detailed construction callouts using Adobe Illustrator, ensuring all visual information provided to factories is clear, accurate, and easy to interpret.
- Evaluate fabric and trim submissions for compatibility with garment design, construction techniques, and performance requirements, conducting tests for shrinkage, torqueing, and durability.
- Conduct in-depth research and analysis of competitor products to benchmark fit, sizing, construction techniques, and innovative features, presenting findings to inform brand strategy.
- Partner with the Quality Assurance (QA) team to establish and align on final quality control standards and inspection procedures for finished garments, ensuring a seamless transition from development to bulk production.
- Provide comprehensive technical risk assessments for new or complex designs, materials, or construction techniques, communicating potential challenges and costs to cross-functional teams.
Secondary Functions
- Maintain and meticulously organize the physical and digital library of all fit samples, approved patterns, and historical technical documentation for future reference and continuity.
- Participate in post-season analysis and product hindsight meetings, presenting insights on customer feedback related to fit, return rate data, and opportunities for technical process improvement.
- Mentor, train, and provide daily guidance to junior technical designers, interns, or assistants, fostering their growth and ensuring adherence to brand standards and best practices.
- Actively contribute to the ongoing development and refinement of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system workflows, data entry standards, and reporting to enhance team efficiency.
- Collaborate with the Materials team to pre-emptively test new fabrics for performance issues before they are adopted into the main product line, documenting results and recommendations.
- Support the organization and execution of wearer trial programs to gather essential real-world feedback on the fit, comfort, and durability of new styles or fits.
- Travel domestically or internationally as needed to visit factories for on-site production troubleshooting, new vendor onboarding, or to oversee critical production stages.
- Assist in developing and refining cost-effective construction methods and pattern engineering solutions that uphold design integrity while meeting margin targets.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Patternmaking & Grading: Expert-level knowledge of manual and/or digital patternmaking (e.g., Gerber, Lectra), grading, and draping principles.
- Garment Construction: Deep understanding of sewing, stitch types, seam finishes, and machinery used in apparel manufacturing for various product types (knits, wovens, denim, outerwear, etc.).
- PLM Software Proficiency: Hands-on experience using Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems such as Centric, FlexPLM, or NGC.
- Adobe Illustrator: Advanced proficiency in creating clean, accurate, and detailed technical flats and construction diagrams.
