  • Technical Writer

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Interpret complex engineering drawings, 3D CAD models, material specifications, and schematics to produce technically accurate and visually engaging illustrations.
  • Create detailed isometric, perspective, and exploded-view illustrations of mechanical and electrical assemblies for use in comprehensive technical manuals and guides.
  • Collaborate directly with engineers, technical writers, product managers, and subject matter experts to gather requirements and ensure the absolute accuracy of visual content.
  • Develop clear and concise assembly, installation, and disassembly sequences that guide end-users through complex procedures safely and efficiently.
  • Utilize specialized software like PTC Creo Illustrate or SolidWorks Composer to repurpose 3D engineering data into rich 2D and 3D technical illustrations and animations.
  • Master the Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) to refine, retouch, and prepare illustrations for both print and digital publication.
  • Manage and maintain a centralized library of all graphical and visual assets, implementing robust version control to reflect product updates and engineering change orders.
  • Strictly adhere to established corporate branding guidelines, departmental style guides, and relevant industry standards (e.g., S1000D) to ensure consistency across all documentation.
  • Revise and update existing illustrations in the content management system to align with product modifications, ensuring all published materials are current.
  • Generate accurate callouts, leaders, and parts lists that directly correspond to the components shown in the illustrations, often linking to bills of materials (BOMs).
  • Create illustrations from physical hardware, photographs, or hand sketches when formal engineering data is incomplete or unavailable.
  • Participate actively in project reviews and team meetings, providing expert input on visual communication strategies and estimating timelines for illustration tasks.
  • Develop simple, clear animations and interactive graphics to visually explain complex processes, product features, or maintenance procedures.
  • Prepare and optimize all graphical content for various delivery platforms, including interactive electronic technical manuals (IETMs), web portals, and mobile applications.
  • Verify the accuracy of all illustrations by comparing them against physical products or production-level engineering data before final release.
  • Work on multiple, often concurrent, projects within a fast-paced environment, effectively managing priorities to meet tight deadlines without compromising quality.

Secondary Functions

  • Research and recommend new illustration software, techniques, and industry best practices to continuously improve team efficiency and output quality.
  • Assist in the ongoing development and refinement of the organization's visual style guides and standards for technical communication.
  • Provide ad-hoc visual design support to adjacent teams, such as marketing and training, for presentations, datasheets, or learning modules as needed.
  • Contribute to usability testing sessions by observing how users interact with illustrated instructions and providing feedback for improvement.
