Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Direct and manage all terminal operations, including dispatch, freight handling, and administrative functions, to ensure timely and cost-effective service.
  • Assume full P&L (Profit and Loss) responsibility for the terminal, including budgeting, forecasting, and actively managing revenues and expenses to achieve financial targets.
  • Champion a world-class safety culture by implementing and enforcing all company policies and procedures, as well as DOT, OSHA, and other applicable regulatory standards.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a diverse team of drivers, dockworkers, and office personnel, managing recruitment, training, performance evaluations, and employee relations.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with key customers, addressing their needs proactively and resolving issues to ensure high levels of satisfaction and retention.
  • Analyze operational performance using Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as on-time service, cost per shipment, and equipment utilization to identify areas for continuous improvement.
  • Oversee the scheduling and management of all inbound and outbound freight shipments, optimizing routing and load planning for maximum efficiency.
  • Manage the terminal's physical assets, including tractors, trailers, and material handling equipment, by overseeing preventative maintenance programs and coordinating repairs.
  • Ensure the security of the facility, personnel, and freight by implementing and monitoring access control, surveillance, and loss prevention protocols.
  • Negotiate and manage contracts with third-party vendors, suppliers, and service providers to ensure quality and cost-effectiveness.
  • Conduct regular safety meetings, facility audits, and incident investigations to mitigate risks and ensure a safe working environment for all employees.
  • Collaborate with the sales and business development teams to identify growth opportunities and support the onboarding of new customers.
  • Handle labor relations and collective bargaining agreement administration in unionized environments, working closely with union representatives to resolve grievances.
  • Develop and execute short-term and long-term strategic plans for the terminal that align with corporate goals and market demands.
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of all required paperwork, documentation, and system data entry for shipments, billing, and compliance.
  • Optimize workforce planning and employee scheduling to match labor with freight volume fluctuations, controlling overtime and labor costs.
  • Act as the primary point of contact during emergencies or service disruptions, leading the response and communication efforts to minimize impact.
  • Drive the adoption of new technologies and systems, such as Transportation Management Systems (TMS), to enhance visibility and operational efficiency.
