Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate prototype, pre-production, and competitor benchmark vehicles on a variety of road types, test tracks, and proving grounds to evaluate overall performance and system functionality.
  • Execute highly specific and often repetitive test procedures with precision to assess vehicle durability, fuel economy, emissions, performance, and thermal management.
  • Meticulously document all subjective impressions and objective data related to vehicle dynamics, ride and handling, NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness), and powertrain performance.
  • Provide clear, concise, and technically sound written and verbal feedback to engineering and development teams, effectively translating driver feel into actionable engineering insights.
  • Conduct comprehensive pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, identifying, documenting, and reporting any mechanical, electrical, or cosmetic issues to ensure test integrity and vehicle safety.
  • Install, configure, and maintain various types of data acquisition systems and test instrumentation within the vehicle, ensuring accurate data collection throughout testing cycles.
  • Perform basic vehicle services, component swaps, and on-the-fly troubleshooting as directed by engineering teams to maximize vehicle uptime and testing efficiency.
  • Adhere with unwavering discipline to all corporate safety protocols, public traffic laws, and specific test course regulations to maintain a zero-incident safety record.
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality and discretion regarding all aspects of future products, including vehicle design, features, and performance capabilities.
  • Drive vehicles for extended durations across diverse and often extreme environmental conditions, such as desert heat, arctic cold, high altitude, and heavy urban traffic.
  • Skillfully replicate specific customer-reported concerns or unique driving scenarios to assist engineering teams in root-cause analysis and problem diagnosis.
  • Evaluate the usability, intuitiveness, and performance of in-vehicle systems, including infotainment, navigation, climate control, and Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS).
  • Participate in formal subjective evaluation events (Jury Drives), providing comparative ratings and detailed analysis of our vehicles against key competitors.
  • Maintain a professional driving record and successfully complete all required advanced driver training, safety certifications, and performance driving courses.
  • Travel as required to domestic and international locations to support remote testing campaigns, including hot-weather, cold-weather, and high-altitude validation programs.
  • Work collaboratively in a dynamic team environment with other drivers, technicians, and engineers to achieve project milestones and testing objectives on schedule.
  • Manage the daily logistics for assigned test vehicles, which includes refueling, cleaning, and coordinating schedules for maintenance, repairs, or instrumentation changes.
  • Generate accurate and detailed daily test logs and summary reports that highlight key findings, test completion status, vehicle mileage, and any observed anomalies.
  • Demonstrate a high level of car control and a deep understanding of vehicle dynamics to safely operate vehicles at their performance limits on closed-course environments.
  • Act as a professional and safety-conscious ambassador for the organization while operating highly visible and sensitive prototype vehicles on public roads.
  • Continuously develop knowledge of emerging automotive technologies and systems to provide increasingly valuable and context-aware feedback during evaluations.

Secondary Functions

  • Support engineering teams with ad-hoc test requests and provide initial, on-the-spot feedback during informal evaluations.
  • Contribute to the evolution of test procedures and vehicle evaluation methodologies by providing feedback on process effectiveness and potential improvements.
  • Collaborate with engineering and quality assurance teams to translate vehicle performance issues and driver feedback into actionable test plans and validation criteria.
  • Participate in project planning meetings and provide driver-centric feedback to the development and testing teams to ensure real-world usage is considered.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Vehicle Operation: Proven ability to expertly operate vehicles with various powertrain and transmission types (Manual, Automatic, EV, Hybrid) in a wide range of conditions.
  • Vehicle Dynamics Acumen: A strong intuitive and technical understanding of vehicle dynamics, including ride, handling, braking, and steering characteristics.
  • Data Acquisition & Instrumentation: Familiarity with installing and operating in-vehicle data loggers, sensors, and data acquisition software (e.g., VBOX, CANalyzer).
  • Basic Mechanical Aptitude: Competency in performing basic vehicle maintenance, such as changing tires, checking fluid levels, and assisting with component swaps.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Completion of a high-performance or defensive driving school.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • A minimum of 5 years of licensed driving experience, with a demonstrable history of responsible and skilled vehicle operation.

  • Experience with prototype vehicle regulations and specific camouflage protocols.
  • A background in competitive driving (e.g., autocross, track days, rallying) is highly advantageous.
