Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Supervise, coordinate, and lead the daily activities of test engineers and technicians engaged in evaluating and testing products and equipment.
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive test plans, test cases, and validation procedures to ensure products meet all specifications and quality standards.
- Manage the scheduling and execution of all testing activities, ensuring the timely completion of projects and the efficient utilization of lab resources and personnel.
- Oversee the setup, calibration, and routine maintenance of all test equipment and instrumentation to guarantee the accuracy and reliability of test results.
- Analyze complex test data, identify performance trends and anomalies, and generate detailed test reports with findings, conclusions, and actionable recommendations.
- Collaborate closely with design, R&D, and manufacturing teams to troubleshoot product failures, identify root causes, and implement robust corrective and preventive actions.
- Provide technical guidance, hands-on training, and professional mentorship to the test team, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
- Ensure all testing activities and documentation strictly comply with relevant industry standards, safety regulations, and the company's Quality Management System (e.g., ISO 9001, AS9100).
- Manage the test lab budget, including the procurement of new equipment and consumables, while actively controlling operational costs and seeking efficiencies.
- Lead daily team huddles and planning meetings to establish priorities, review project progress, and proactively address any roadblocks faced by the team.
- Evaluate and recommend new testing technologies, automation tools, and advanced methodologies to enhance test efficiency, coverage, and overall effectiveness.
- Serve as the primary technical point of contact for all matters related to product testing, effectively communicating status, risks, and results to project managers and senior leadership.
- Conduct performance reviews, establish clear individual and team goals, and manage the career development path for all direct reports within the test department.
- Drive the development and implementation of automated test scripts and fixtures to improve test repeatability, increase throughput, and reduce manual testing efforts.
- Lead formal failure analysis investigations using structured problem-solving methodologies like 8D or 5 Whys to determine the fundamental root cause of product non-conformance.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and highly organized work environment within the test lab, rigorously enforcing all safety protocols and procedures for personnel.
- Coordinate with external test houses and certification bodies for specialized testing, compliance verification, and third-party validation efforts.
- Develop, track, and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) for the test team, such as test cycle time, first pass yield, and defect escape rates.
- Review and provide critical input on Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and product deviations to assess their impact on testing and product validation.
- Champion a quality-first mindset throughout the organization by clearly communicating the value and impact of rigorous testing on product reliability and customer satisfaction.
- Ensure the meticulous documentation and secure archiving of all test procedures, raw data, final reports, and equipment calibration records per company and regulatory policies.
- Lead the design and fabrication of custom test fixtures and harnesses required for new product introductions and specialized test setups.
Secondary Functions
- Represent the test department in cross-functional project meetings, design reviews, and phase-gate approvals.
- Assist in the development and ongoing management of the department's annual operating budget and capital expenditure plans.
- Contribute subject matter expertise to the continuous improvement of the organization's overarching Quality Management System (QMS).
- Participate in supplier audits and new vendor evaluations as a technical expert for incoming material and component testing requirements.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Deep proficiency with electronic test equipment, including oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, digital multimeters, power supplies, and logic analyzers.
- Strong experience with environmental and reliability testing, such as thermal cycling, vibration, shock, humidity, and HALT/HASS.
- In-depth knowledge of Quality Management Systems (QMS) and relevant standards (e.g., ISO 9001, IATF 16949, AS9100).
- Expertise in test automation development using scripting languages like Python, LabVIEW, C/C++, or similar.
- Familiarity with data acquisition (DAQ) systems and hardware/software (e.g., National Instruments).
- Ability to read, interpret, and analyze complex engineering drawings, electrical schematics, and technical specifications.
- Experience with test plan and defect tracking software such as Jira, TestRail, or Azure DevOps.
- Solid understanding of statistical analysis methods, Statistical Process Control (SPC), and Design of Experiments (DOE).
