Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Spearhead the development of new textiles and materials from initial concept through to bulk production, ensuring alignment with design vision and performance criteria.
  • Create, manage, and meticulously maintain comprehensive technical specification packages for all materials, including fiber content, yarn details, fabric construction, weight, and finishing processes.
  • Conduct and oversee rigorous physical and chemical testing of textiles based on industry standards (e.g., AATCC, ASTM, ISO) to validate performance, quality, and durability.
  • Champion the research and integration of innovative textile technologies, sustainable fibers, and advanced manufacturing processes to secure a competitive edge in the market.
  • Manage the end-to-end color development process, including lab dip submissions, color standard creation, and production batch approval using both visual and spectral data.
  • Act as the primary technical liaison with domestic and international mills, suppliers, and vendors to direct development, troubleshoot issues, and ensure adherence to quality protocols.
  • Analyze and systematically solve complex manufacturing and quality issues related to textiles, such as weaving defects, dyeing inconsistencies, or finishing failures.
  • Engineer materials to meet specific cost targets by optimizing raw material selection, construction, and processing without sacrificing quality or performance.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive material validation and qualification plans for new suppliers and manufacturing facilities.
  • Drive sustainability initiatives by identifying and qualifying recycled materials, bio-based fibers, and environmentally-friendly chemical finishes.
  • Interpret technical data and test results to provide clear, actionable recommendations to product development, design, and sourcing teams.
  • Lead the risk assessment of new materials and processes, proactively identifying potential quality, performance, or production challenges.
  • Ensure all developed textiles meet global regulatory, safety, and compliance standards, such as RSL (Restricted Substances List) and REACH.
  • Establish and enforce robust quality control protocols and inspection criteria for raw materials and finished fabrics throughout the supply chain.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc material testing and exploratory analysis to aid in root cause analysis or new innovation brainstorming.
  • Contribute expert insights to the organization's long-term material strategy, innovation pipeline, and sustainability roadmap.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional partners, including designers, product managers, and supply chain teams, to translate creative needs into tangible engineering requirements.
  • Participate actively in project management, sprint planning, and agile development ceremonies within the product creation team.
  • Author and maintain a centralized library of technical documentation, test reports, and material standards for organizational reference.
  • Provide technical training and mentorship to junior engineers, technicians, and other team members on textile science and processes.

  • Direct experience managing development projects with global mills and manufacturing partners. A demonstrated track record of successfully commercializing new materials from concept to production is highly desirable.
