🎯 Role Definition

As a Textile Pattern Maker, you are the crucial link between creative design and tangible product. You are an architect of apparel, responsible for interpreting a designer's vision and engineering the foundational patterns that dictate a garment's fit, form, and function. This role demands a blend of artistic sensibility and technical precision, using both traditional draping/flat-pattern methods and modern CAD software. You will lead fittings, solve complex construction puzzles, and collaborate with a cross-functional team to bring high-quality, commercially viable products to market while upholding the brand's aesthetic and fit standards.

📈 Career Progression

Typical Career Path

Entry Point From:

  • Assistant Pattern Maker
  • Sample Maker / Sewer
  • Technical Design Assistant

Advancement To:

  • Senior Pattern Maker / Lead Pattern Maker
  • Head of Pattern Making / Pattern Room Manager
  • Technical Design Manager

Lateral Moves:

  • Technical Designer
  • Product Developer

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop and engineer first-through-production patterns for a wide array of textile products, including complex wovens, knits, and outerwear, ensuring precision, fit, and manufacturability.
  • Create and manipulate digital patterns using industry-standard CAD systems (such as Gerber, Lectra, or Optitex), ensuring all pattern pieces are correctly drafted, labeled, and production-ready.
  • Lead and participate in live model or form fittings, expertly diagnosing fit issues and translating design, technical, and merchandising feedback into accurate pattern revisions.
  • Execute pattern grading to company-specified size ranges, establishing and maintaining consistent grade rules to ensure fit integrity across all sizes.
  • Generate highly efficient and cost-effective digital production markers, analyzing fabric utilization and yield to minimize waste and support profitability goals.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive and detailed technical packages (tech packs), including accurate garment specifications, points of measure (POM), construction details, and sewing instructions.
  • Translate original design sketches and concepts into tangible patterns, applying a deep knowledge of draping, flat-pattern making, and 3D virtual prototyping techniques.
  • Collaborate closely with the Design team from initial concept review, providing critical technical feedback on construction feasibility, fabric suitability, and silhouette development.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex pattern and construction challenges that arise during the sampling and pre-production phases, offering innovative and practical solutions.
  • Create and maintain a library of master block patterns, ensuring the brand's core fit and sizing standards are consistently applied across all product categories.
  • Review and measure all incoming samples (proto, SMS, pre-production) against technical specifications, ensuring accuracy and adherence to fit standards.
  • Communicate precise and clear pattern-related comments, corrections, and instructions to domestic and overseas factories and vendors.

Secondary Functions

  • Partner with the Product Development and Sourcing teams to provide input on garment costing based on construction complexity and fabric yield.
  • Research and stay current with new pattern making technologies, construction techniques, and software advancements to drive innovation and efficiency.
string_containing- Attend pre-production meetings to ensure a smooth hand-off of the final approved pattern and tech pack to the manufacturing team.
  • Maintain a highly organized digital and physical pattern library, managing version control and ensuring accessibility for the technical team.
  • Assist in establishing and documenting quality control and construction standards for the company's product lines.
  • Provide technical mentorship and guidance to junior pattern makers, interns, or technical assistants within the department.
  • Collaborate with the Quality Assurance team to analyze and resolve any production-related fit or quality issues identified in bulk production.
  • Evaluate a garment's construction to ensure it aligns with the target cost, retail price point, and production capabilities.
