Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop and Implement Quality Standards: Establish, document, and maintain comprehensive quality assurance standards, inspection procedures, and testing protocols for raw materials (yarns, dyes, chemicals), in-process goods, and finished textile products.
  • Team Leadership and Supervision: Directly supervise, train, and mentor a team of quality control inspectors and technicians, managing their daily schedules, assigning inspection tasks, and evaluating their performance to ensure consistent and accurate execution of QA duties.
  • In-Process and Final Product Inspection: Oversee and conduct rigorous in-line and end-of-line inspections of textile products, utilizing industry-standard methods like the 4-point or 10-point system to identify, classify, and document defects in weaving, knitting, dyeing, printing, and finishing.
  • AQL Management: Define and implement appropriate Acceptable Quality Limits (AQL) for various product categories and conduct pre-shipment audits to ensure outgoing goods meet the established AQL standards.
  • Defect Analysis and Root Cause Investigation: Lead the investigation into quality failures and product defects, performing detailed root cause analysis (RCA) to identify the source of issues within the production process and prevent recurrence.
  • Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA): Initiate, document, and manage the CAPA process by collaborating with production, maintenance, and engineering teams to implement effective solutions for identified quality problems.
  • Supplier Quality Management: Liaise with raw material suppliers to communicate quality requirements, evaluate supplier performance, and address any non-conformities in incoming materials, including conducting supplier site audits as needed.
  • Material and Color Approval: Manage the lab dip, strike-off, and bulk fabric submission process, providing timely and accurate feedback and approval based on color, hand-feel, and performance standards.
  • Physical and Chemical Testing Oversight: Supervise the in-house laboratory or coordinate with third-party labs to perform essential physical and chemical tests, such as colorfastness, shrinkage, tensile strength, pilling resistance, and fabric weight (GSM).
  • Technical Specification Compliance: Ensure all products are manufactured in strict accordance with the approved technical packs, bill of materials (BOM), and construction guidelines provided by the product development or technical design teams.
  • Calibration and Equipment Maintenance: Maintain a schedule for the calibration and preventative maintenance of all quality inspection and testing equipment (e.g., light boxes, crock meters, spectrophotometers) to guarantee accuracy and reliability.
  • Quality Reporting and Metrics: Prepare and present detailed daily, weekly, and monthly quality reports for management, highlighting key performance indicators (KPIs) such as defect rates, first-pass yield, and cost of poor quality.
  • Risk Assessment: Proactively conduct quality risk assessments for new products, materials, or processes to anticipate potential issues and develop mitigation strategies before they impact production.
  • Customer Complaint Resolution: Serve as the technical point of contact for investigating customer complaints related to product quality, analyzing returned products, and providing detailed findings to inform corrective actions.
  • Training and Development: Develop and deliver ongoing training programs for both the quality team and production operators on quality standards, defect identification, and best practices to foster a shared sense of quality ownership.

Secondary Functions

  • Continuous Improvement Initiatives: Actively participate in and lead lean manufacturing or Six Sigma projects aimed at improving process efficiency, reducing waste, and enhancing overall product quality.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Production, Planning, Merchandising, and Product Development teams to align on quality expectations and ensure a smooth workflow from concept to shipment.
  • Documentation and Record Keeping: Ensure all quality-related documentation, including inspection reports, test results, CAPA forms, and approval records, is meticulously maintained, organized, and accessible for audits and traceability.
  • Stay Abreast of Industry Standards: Keep up-to-date with evolving international quality standards, testing methodologies, and regulatory requirements (e.g., RSL/MRSL, Oeko-Tex, GOTS) relevant to the textile industry.
  • Technology Integration: Assist in evaluating and implementing new quality management software (QMS) or digital inspection tools to improve data collection, analysis, and reporting efficiency.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Fabric Inspection: Expertise in visual fabric defect identification and classification using standardized systems (e.g., 4-Point System).
  • Textile Testing Knowledge: Proficient in a wide range of physical and chemical textile testing methods (e.g., colorfastness, crocking, shrinkage, tensile strength, seam slippage).
  • Color Evaluation: Strong ability to accurately evaluate color under controlled lighting (light box) and proficiency with color measurement tools like spectrophotometers.
  • AQL & Statistical Quality Control: In-depth understanding and practical application of Acceptable Quality Limits (AQL) and statistical process control (SPC) methodologies.
  • Knowledge of Textile Manufacturing: Comprehensive understanding of the end-to-end textile production process, including spinning, weaving, knitting, dyeing, printing, and finishing.
  • Root Cause Analysis (RCA): Skilled in using problem-solving techniques like 5 Whys or Fishbone Diagrams to determine the source of quality issues.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent combined with extensive, directly relevant experience.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree or Associate's Degree.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 5-8 years of progressive experience in a textile quality assurance or quality control function, with at least 2-3 years in a supervisory or lead capacity.

Preferred:

  • Experience in a vertically integrated textile mill or a large-scale garment manufacturing facility.
  • Hands-on experience with both fabric and finished garment quality control.
  • Certification in quality management systems (e.g., ASQ Certified Quality Technician, Six Sigma Green Belt) is a significant plus.
