Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct a comprehensive battery of physical tests on fabrics and garments, including tensile strength, tear resistance, seam slippage, and burst strength, using equipment like an Instron tester to evaluate material durability.
  • Perform rigorous abrasion and pilling resistance tests using Martindale and Taber abrasion machines to predict long-term wear and appearance retention.
  • Execute dimensional stability and shrinkage tests after laundering and dry-cleaning to ensure garments maintain their shape and fit throughout their lifecycle.
  • Evaluate fabric performance characteristics such as water repellency, moisture-wicking capabilities, and air permeability to validate claims for technical and performance apparel.
  • Perform detailed fiber composition analysis using microscopic identification and chemical dissolution methods to verify the accuracy of content labeling (e.g., cotton, polyester, wool blends).
  • Conduct a full range of colorfastness tests, including colorfastness to laundering, crocking (wet and dry), light, and perspiration, to ensure color stability and prevent dye transfer.
  • Utilize a spectrophotometer and standardized light boxes (e.g., D65, CWF) to objectively measure color values (Lab*) and visually assess color consistency against approved standards.
  • Analyze fabric construction by determining threads per inch (TPI), yarn size, and weave/knit structure, ensuring it aligns with technical specifications.
  • Test for the presence of restricted or harmful substances, such as formaldehyde, heavy metals, and banned Azo dyes, to ensure compliance with global regulations like REACH and CPSIA.
  • Evaluate the pH value of wet-processed textiles to ensure they are safe for skin contact and will not cause irritation.
  • Meticulously prepare fabric, yarn, and garment samples for testing according to specific AATCC, ASTM, ISO, or internal company test methods.
  • Accurately record all test results, observations, and deviations in a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) or designated databases with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Compile, analyze, and interpret test data to generate comprehensive and clear test reports for internal teams, including product development, sourcing, and quality assurance.
  • Identify and flag any out-of-spec materials or products, initiating non-conformance reports and collaborating with QA teams to investigate root causes.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot a wide range of laboratory testing equipment to ensure accuracy, precision, and operational readiness.
  • Manage and maintain an organized inventory of laboratory chemicals, consumables, and testing standards, ensuring proper storage and handling.
  • Assist in the development, validation, and revision of new and existing test procedures and standard operating protocols (SOPs).
  • Uphold and promote a safe and clean laboratory environment by adhering to all safety guidelines and proper chemical handling procedures.
  • Participate in round-robin testing or inter-lab correlation studies to ensure alignment with other internal or third-party laboratories.
  • Assess finished garments for workmanship defects, including stitching, seam quality, and overall construction, comparing them against approved technical packs and samples.

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • AATCC & ASTM Standards: Proficient in preparing samples and executing tests according to AATCC (American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists) and ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) methodologies.
  • Physical Testing Equipment: Hands-on experience operating equipment such as tensile testers, Martindale/Taber abraders, crockmeters, and Elmendorf tear testers.
  • Color Evaluation: Skilled in using spectrophotometers for digital color measurement and standardized light boxes for visual color assessment against standards.
  • Chemical & Analytical Testing: Knowledge of basic wet chemistry techniques for fiber identification, pH testing, and formaldehyde analysis.
