  • Establish and maintain a comprehensive physical and digital yarn library, ensuring it is current, well-organized, and serves as an inspirational and functional resource for the design and product teams.
  • Drive all aspects of yarn quality assurance, defining testing protocols (e.g., AATCC/ASTM standards for strength, pilling, colorfastness) and making critical decisions on bulk yarn approval.
  • Act as the primary technical liaison between internal teams (Design, PD, Production) and external yarn suppliers, effectively communicating requirements and troubleshooting issues.
  • Manage the yarn color development process, overseeing lab dip submissions, evaluating color under various light sources, and providing clear, decisive feedback for approvals.
  • Conduct rigorous risk assessments on new and existing yarns, analyzing potential performance issues and developing mitigation strategies to prevent production failures.
  • Negotiate costing and lead times with yarn mills, leveraging market knowledge and strong supplier relationships to achieve business targets without compromising quality.
  • Champion material sustainability initiatives by researching and promoting the use of recycled, organic, and other environmentally preferred fibers and processes (e.g., GRS, OCS, RWS).
  • Travel internationally and domestically to supplier facilities for R&D meetings, new development kick-offs, quality audits, and production troubleshooting.
  • Analyze and interpret yarn testing data and reports, translating complex technical information into actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Create and maintain meticulous records and data within the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system for all yarn specifications, costs, and supplier information.
  • Proactively research and present findings on emerging yarn trends, new fiber technologies, and manufacturing innovations to keep the brand at the forefront of the industry.
  • Collaborate directly with garment technical designers to troubleshoot and resolve issues where yarn characteristics impact garment construction, fit, or performance.
  • Develop and implement yarn performance standards across all product categories, ensuring consistency and adherence to brand quality expectations.
  • Partner with the compliance team to ensure all sourced yarns meet global regulatory standards, including RSL (Restricted Substances List) and other chemical safety requirements.
  • Lead post-season analysis of yarn performance based on customer feedback and return data, driving continuous improvement in material selection.
  • Mentor and educate junior team members and cross-functional partners on the fundamentals of yarn science, construction, and its impact on the final product.
  • Manage counter-sourcing and development projects to validate secondary or tertiary suppliers for key yarn programs, ensuring supply chain security and flexibility.
  • Evaluate the impact of different dye and finish applications on yarn hand-feel, performance, and color consistency, guiding suppliers to achieve desired outcomes.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis on yarn costs, usage, and performance.
  • Contribute to the organization's broader materials strategy and sustainability roadmap.
  • Collaborate with business units to translate data-driven insights on material performance into engineering and development requirements.
