Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Design, create, and implement high-quality, photorealistic or stylized textures for a wide range of 3D assets, including characters, weapons, props, and complex environmental pieces.
- Author materials and textures that adhere to Physically Based Rendering (PBR) standards, ensuring they react realistically to lighting conditions within the game engine.
- Create bespoke, hand-painted textures that capture the unique artistic style and mood of the project, often working from concept art or style guides.
- Develop and maintain a library of high-quality tiling materials, smart materials, and texture resources for team-wide use, promoting efficiency and consistency.
- Expertly unwrap and optimize UV layouts for a variety of asset types, maximizing texel density while adhering to strict memory and performance budgets.
- Collaborate intimately with the Art Director and Lead Artists to establish and uphold the visual style, quality bar, and texturing pipeline for the project.
- Work in tandem with 3D Modelers to ensure models have the proper topology and UVs to support high-quality texturing and deformation.
- Generate and bake essential texture maps (such as normal, ambient occlusion, curvature, and height) from high-poly models onto low-poly, game-ready assets.
- Author and tweak complex materials and shaders directly within game engines like Unreal Engine or Unity to achieve specific surface effects and visual fidelity.
- Stay on the cutting edge of industry tools, techniques, and workflows, particularly in procedural texturing software like Substance Designer and Painter.
- Troubleshoot and meticulously solve technical and artistic issues related to textures, materials, and shaders in the engine.
- Create and apply decals, trim sheets, and texture atlases to efficiently add high-frequency detail to environments and assets.
- Actively participate in art reviews, providing and receiving constructive feedback to and from peers to elevate the final product.
- Translate 2D concept art into fully realized 3D textures, ensuring the original artistic intent and vision are maintained.
- Manage and balance texture memory and shader complexity to ensure all assets perform smoothly on the target platform without sacrificing visual quality.

- Experience with both character and environment texturing.
