Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Assist the Master Electrician with the safe and precise rigging, circuiting, and patching of all conventional and intelligent lighting fixtures according to the lighting plot.
- Execute the hanging and focusing of lighting instruments with precision, interpreting designer specifications to achieve the desired look and feel on stage.
- Operate the lighting control console (e.g., ETC Eos family) during technical rehearsals and performances, executing pre-programmed cues with accuracy and timing.
- Skillfully operate a followspot during performances, tracking performers smoothly and accurately as directed by the Stage Manager.
- Conduct routine maintenance, cleaning, and repair of all lighting equipment, including conventional fixtures, moving lights, consoles, and dimming systems.
- Perform pre-show checks on the entire lighting system to ensure all equipment is fully functional and prepared for the performance.
- Proactively troubleshoot and resolve any electrical, data (DMX/sACN), or mechanical issues with lighting equipment that may arise during rehearsals or shows.
- Interpret and work from complex lighting plots, channel hookups, and other technical drawings and documentation provided by the Lighting Designer.
- Manage the physical inventory of lighting consumables such as color media (gels), gobos, lamps, and specialized tape, ensuring stock levels are maintained.
- Participate actively in all lighting load-ins, strikes, and changeovers between productions, ensuring efficient and safe working practices.
- Implement and adhere to all health and safety protocols, particularly concerning electrical safety, working at height, and rigging standards.
- Assist the Lighting Designer and Programmer during cueing sessions by providing on-stage focus notes and making adjustments to fixtures.
- Run, secure, and manage all necessary power and data cabling throughout the venue, maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
- Prepare and test atmospheric effects equipment, such as foggers and hazers, ensuring they are operated safely and effectively.
Secondary Functions
- Support the Head of Lighting with the organization and upkeep of all lighting storage areas, inventory systems, and workspaces.
- Assist in the supervision and training of over-hire electricians, interns, or apprentices working within the lighting department.
- Collaborate with other production departments, including sound, video, and scenic, to ensure seamless integration of all technical elements.
- Document any changes, updates, or substitutions made to the lighting rig during the production run for archival purposes.
- Stay current with emerging technologies, new equipment, and innovative techniques within the professional lighting industry.
- When required, operate or support other show-related technical elements as a versatile member of the production crew.
- Attend production meetings, technical notes calls, and staff meetings to stay informed and contribute to the collaborative process.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Lighting Console Operation: Proficiency with industry-standard consoles, particularly the ETC Eos family (Ion, Gio, Element); familiarity with GrandMA or Hog is a plus.
- Electrical Knowledge: Solid understanding of basic electrical theory, power distribution, and safe wiring practices for stage lighting.
- Rigging and Focusing: Demonstrable skill in safely hanging, securing, and precisely focusing a variety of theatrical lighting instruments.
- Troubleshooting: Ability to diagnose and repair issues with lighting fixtures, cabling, and control systems in a time-sensitive environment.
- CAD Software: Ability to read and interpret lighting plots created in software like Vectorworks Spotlight or AutoCAD.
- Equipment Maintenance: Experience performing routine maintenance and basic repairs on both conventional and intelligent lighting fixtures.
- Networking: Basic knowledge of lighting network protocols such as DMX512, RDM, sACN, and Art-Net.
- Working at Heights: Confidence and certification (or willingness to be trained) for working on ladders, personnel lifts, and catwalks.

Education & Experience
Educational Background
Minimum Education:
- High School Diploma or GED with demonstrated experience in technical theatre.
Preferred Education:
- Bachelor's Degree (BFA/BA) or an Associate's/Certificate in Technical Theatre, Theatre Design & Production, or a related field.

Experience Requirements
Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years
Preferred:
- At least one year of professional experience as a stage electrician or lighting technician in a producing theatre, performing arts center, or for a live event company.
