As the operator of the sound console (the "A1"), this individual is responsible for mixing all audio elements—from actors' microphones and the orchestra to complex sound effects—in real-time, ensuring clarity, balance, and emotional impact for every show. This position is the backbone of the sound department during performances, requiring intense focus, quick problem-solving, and a deep passion for storytelling through sound.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate the main sound mixing console with precision and artistry during all technical rehearsals, previews, and performances to create a high-quality, well-balanced audio experience.
  • Collaborate directly with the Sound Designer and Director during the production period to help realize the artistic vision, programming the console and playback systems to meet creative requirements.
  • Execute all sound cues, including microphone pickups, sound effects, and musical underscoring, flawlessly as called by the Stage Manager.
  • Manage the complex wireless microphone (RF) system, including expert frequency coordination, fitting microphones on performers, and ensuring consistent and interference-free operation.
  • Conduct comprehensive pre-show system checks on all audio equipment, including speakers, amplifiers, consoles, microphones, and communication systems, to guarantee show readiness.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any audio-related technical issues that arise during a live performance swiftly and calmly to minimize any impact on the show and audience experience.
  • Program and manage audio playback systems, primarily QLab, ensuring all sound effects and music tracks are correctly loaded, routed, and triggered.
  • Maintain all sound department equipment in excellent working condition, performing regular cleaning, diagnostics, and repairs such as soldering and re-cabling.
  • Mix live musical elements, including the orchestra or band and vocalists, ensuring a clear and powerful blend that supports the musical direction of the show.
  • Oversee the work of the Assistant Sound Engineer (A2) and other audio crew, providing clear direction for microphone changes, battery swaps, and backstage audio tasks.
  • Create and meticulously maintain all departmental documentation, including cue sheets, console programming files, system diagrams, and inventory lists.
  • Actively participate in production meetings and technical notes sessions, providing constructive feedback and updates from the sound department.
  • Ensure the safety of the cast, crew, and audience by adhering to all health and safety protocols, especially regarding safe volume levels and electrical safety.
  • Lead the installation, setup, and strike (load-out) of all audio equipment in the venue, ensuring it is done safely, efficiently, and according to the sound design plot.
  • Manage and maintain the show's communication (comms) system, ensuring clear and reliable communication between all technical departments and stage management.
  • Adapt the live sound mix dynamically to account for variables such as different audience sizes, atmospheric changes, understudies, or unexpected on-stage events.

Secondary Functions

  • Stay informed about current trends, new equipment, and emerging technologies in the professional audio and theatre industry to recommend potential system upgrades or new workflows.
  • Provide technical audio support for special events, press appearances, donor functions, or archival recordings hosted by the theatre.
  • Assist other technical departments (lighting, video, automation) with their load-in or strike when a collective effort is required.
  • Liaise with venue management and facilities staff to address issues concerning power distribution, rigging points, and acoustical treatments affecting the sound system.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expert-level proficiency in operating professional large-format digital mixing consoles, particularly from brands like DiGiCo, Yamaha, and Allen & Heath.
  • Advanced programming and operation skills for audio show control software, with a primary focus on QLab.
  • Deep knowledge of wireless microphone systems and robust skills in RF frequency scanning, coordination, and management.
  • Comprehensive understanding of audio signal flow, gain structure, system processing, and acoustic measurement using tools like Smaart.
  • Proven ability in audio equipment maintenance, including soldering, cable repair, and basic electronic component troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with digital audio networking protocols, especially Dante, for routing audio across a complex system.
  • Experience in mixing both large-scale musical theatre (with orchestras and many vocalists) and dialogue-heavy plays.
  • Strong computer literacy, including comfort with Mac OS, Windows, and networking basics.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent. In the theatre industry, extensive professional experience is often valued as highly as formal education.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or a certificate from a specialized program in Technical Theatre, Audio Engineering, or a closely related discipline.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • A minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience in live theatre sound, with demonstrated experience in a lead audio role (A1 or A2) on professional productions.

Preferred:

  • Experience as the primary audio mixer (A1) on large-scale musicals, touring productions, or in a major regional theatre or LORT venue is highly desirable. A portfolio or list of past shows worked on is often requested.
