Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assist licensed therapists in administering treatment plans by guiding patients through prescribed therapeutic exercises and functional activities.
  • Meticulously prepare and organize treatment areas for patient sessions, ensuring all necessary equipment and supplies are clean, functional, and readily accessible.
  • Safely transport, transfer, and position patients to and from therapy sessions, utilizing proper body mechanics and patient handling equipment like gait belts, slide boards, and lifts.
  • Observe patients during therapy, vigilantly monitoring their response to treatment, and promptly reporting any changes, concerns, adverse reactions, or signs of fatigue to the supervising therapist.
  • Provide hands-on assistance to patients as directed, helping them with ambulation, functional mobility, balance activities, and activities of daily living (ADLs).
  • Set up, adjust, and operate therapeutic equipment and modalities, such as hot/cold packs, ultrasound machines, and electrical stimulation units, under the therapist's direct guidance.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized therapy environment by routinely sanitizing equipment, changing linens, and ensuring treatment areas comply with strict infection control protocols.
  • Accurately and promptly document treatment-related information in patient charts or Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems, including services provided, patient participation, and time spent.
  • Manage the inventory of therapy supplies and equipment, performing regular stock checks, ordering new supplies, and notifying the appropriate personnel when equipment requires maintenance or repair.
  • Greet patients and their families with a warm, professional, and reassuring demeanor, helping to create a positive and welcoming atmosphere in the clinic or facility.
  • Perform a variety of clerical and administrative duties to support departmental efficiency, including answering phones, scheduling patient appointments, and managing patient files.
  • Instruct and educate patients and their caregivers on the proper use of assistive devices, such as crutches, walkers, and canes, ensuring they can do so safely and effectively.
  • Aid in the fabrication and modification of splints, assistive devices, or other adaptive equipment under the close supervision of an Occupational Therapist.
  • Prepare and maintain specialized hydrotherapy areas, including therapeutic pools and whirlpools, ensuring they consistently meet safety and sanitation standards.
  • Support group therapy sessions by setting up the environment, gathering necessary materials, and assisting multiple patients simultaneously under therapist direction.
  • Photocopy, file, and distribute therapy-related documentation, including home exercise programs and patient education materials, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Communicate effectively and compassionately with a diverse patient population, including individuals with physical, cognitive, or emotional challenges, adapting your approach as needed.
  • Uphold strict patient confidentiality at all times, adhering to all HIPAA regulations and facility policies to protect sensitive health information.
  • Collaborate effectively with the interdisciplinary healthcare team, including nurses, doctors, and other support staff, to ensure coordinated and holistic patient care.
  • Actively participate in departmental meetings, team huddles, and in-service training sessions to stay current with best practices, safety procedures, and new therapeutic techniques.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency in a variety of patient transfer techniques (e.g., use of gait belts, slide boards, and mechanical lifts).
  • Solid knowledge of basic medical terminology, human anatomy, and physiology.
  • Competence in operating and maintaining standard therapeutic modalities (e.g., ultrasound, e-stim, hot/cold packs).
  • Experience with Electronic Health Record (EHR) or Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems for documentation.
  • Skill in performing basic administrative tasks, including scheduling, filing, and managing patient records.
  • Comprehensive understanding and application of proper body mechanics for personal and patient safety.
  • Current CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
