A technician in this position is responsible for a range of services, including oil changes, tire rotations, fluid checks, and multi-point inspections. They are the first line of defense in identifying potential issues, ensuring customers' vehicles are in top condition and providing a foundation of trust between the customer and the service facility.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive multi-point vehicle inspections, meticulously checking belts, hoses, brakes, and suspension components, and accurately documenting findings for service advisors.
  • Execute routine lubrication services, including draining and refilling engine oil, replacing oil filters, and resetting maintenance lights according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Skillfully dismount, mount, and balance tires on a wide array of wheel types, ensuring precise balancing for a smooth ride and extended tire life.
  • Conduct tire rotations to promote even tread wear and perform tire repairs, such as plugging and patching, in accordance with strict industry safety standards.
  • Inspect tire pressure and tread depth, providing clear, professional recommendations to customers regarding tire health and replacement needs.
  • Perform thorough fluid exchanges for systems such as coolant, transmission, brake, and power steering using specialized flushing equipment.
  • Conduct comprehensive battery health tests, clean corrosion from terminals, and professionally install new batteries, ensuring all vehicle electronic systems are functioning correctly post-installation.
  • Replace common wear-and-tear items for customers, including engine and cabin air filters, windshield wiper blades, and various exterior light bulbs.
  • Provide direct support to senior technicians on more involved mechanical repairs, acting as a capable assistant for tasks like brake services or suspension work.
  • Test-drive vehicles both before and after service to verify customer complaints and confirm that all maintenance or repairs have been completed successfully.
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with service advisors, providing timely updates on vehicle status, unexpected findings, and estimated completion times.
  • Accurately and legibly document all services performed, parts used, and inspection results on digital or paper repair orders to create a permanent service history.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free personal workspace and contribute to the overall cleanliness and safety of the entire shop.
  • Operate and perform daily maintenance checks on all shop equipment, including vehicle lifts, tire machines, wheel balancers, and air compressors, reporting any malfunctions immediately.
  • Properly handle and dispose of all used fluids, old tires, and other hazardous waste materials in compliance with environmental regulations and company policies.
  • Assist in managing the inventory of bulk oils, filters, and other essential shop supplies, alerting management when stock levels are low to prevent work stoppages.
  • Ensure every vehicle is treated with care, consistently using protective floor mats, seat covers, and fender covers to prevent any damage or soiling during service.
  • Actively participate in team meetings, safety briefings, and ongoing training sessions to continuously improve skills and contribute to a positive shop culture.
  • Greet customers in the service lane when necessary, projecting a friendly and professional image that builds customer confidence.
  • Perform final quality control checks on vehicles before returning them to the customer to ensure all work was completed to the highest standard.

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency with the hand, pneumatic, and power tools essential for automotive maintenance.
  • Competent operation of specialized shop equipment, including tire mounting machines, wheel balancers, and vehicle lifts.
  • Foundational knowledge of vehicle mechanics, including engine, drivetrain, brake, and suspension systems.
  • Ability to accurately read and interpret technical service manuals and work orders.
  • Physical stamina and strength to lift and move items weighing up to 50-75 lbs, and to stand, bend, and kneel for extended periods.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and a clean driving record, enabling the test-driving of customer vehicles.
  • Basic computer literacy for navigating shop management software and accessing digital service information.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Current or progressing towards ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications (e.g., G1, A4, A5).

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0 - 3 years of relevant experience.

Preferred: 6+ months of hands-on experience in a professional automotive shop, dealership, or tire center environment is highly desirable. Candidates with a strong portfolio of personal automotive projects may also be considered.
