Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Act as the ultimate authority on-stage, directing all personnel and calling all technical cues (lighting, sound, video, automation, SFX) with precision during the live performance.
- Supervise, delegate, and direct all touring and local stage crew, including carpenters, electricians, audio technicians, and backline techs, throughout the entire production day from load-in to load-out.
- Conduct rigorous pre-show checks of all stage elements, including backline, props, scenery, and automation systems, to guarantee they are safe, functional, and in their correct show positions.
- Manage seamless and efficient set changes between acts, ensuring transitions are executed quickly, quietly, and safely.
- Enforce and maintain stringent health and safety protocols on-stage and backstage, leading daily safety briefings and ensuring 100% compliance with OSHA, venue, and union regulations.
- Serve as the primary on-stage troubleshooter, rapidly diagnosing and resolving any technical, logistical, or personnel issues that arise during setup or a live show.
- Maintain the artistic integrity of the production, ensuring every element of the show is executed with consistency and excellence across every city on the tour.
- Facilitate real-time, clear communication between all production departments, including FOH, monitors, lighting, video, and the performers on stage.
- Direct the precise placement and movement of all performers, artists, and guests on and off the stage according to the show's choreography and blocking.
- Execute show-stop procedures decisively and calmly in the event of an equipment failure, medical emergency, or security threat, ensuring the safety of all personnel and audience members.
- Oversee the physical stage setup and strike, ensuring the deck is built to spec, marked correctly, and managed efficiently.
- Lead the on-stage team to ensure that all performance-related equipment is show-ready and that any repairs or maintenance are addressed promptly.
Secondary Functions
- Create, maintain, and distribute detailed daily schedules, run-of-show documents, cue sheets, and production timelines to all relevant touring and local personnel.
- Advance stage-specific technical requirements with upcoming venues, confirming stage dimensions, power availability, rigging points, and local labor needs ahead of arrival.
- Liaise directly with the Production Manager and Tour Manager, providing clear and concise updates on progress, challenges, and daily operational status.
- Manage the backstage environment to maintain a professional, secure, and focused atmosphere, controlling access credentials and flow.
- Oversee the methodical packing of all stage-related scenery and equipment, ensuring it is loaded onto trucks securely and in the correct order for the next load-in.
- Maintain a comprehensive "show bible" containing all essential documentation, including cue sheets, stage plots, input lists, and contact sheets, updating it as the production evolves.
- Coordinate with the Production Manager on tracking stage-related expenses, local labor hours, and the use of show consumables.
- Document and report any equipment damage, personnel injuries, or significant show-related incidents to tour leadership in a timely and accurate manner.
