Primary Functions

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate comprehensive, multi-year tourism strategic plans that align with community values, economic goals, and sustainability principles.
  • Conduct in-depth research and analysis of tourism market trends, visitor demographics, competitor destinations, and emerging travel patterns to inform strategic decision-making.
  • Identify and assess a destination's existing and potential tourism assets, including natural, cultural, historical, and recreational resources, to guide product development.
  • Forge and maintain strong collaborative relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including government agencies, local businesses, tourism operators, community groups, and indigenous partners.
  • Design and execute detailed action plans for specific tourism initiatives, such as festival and event strategies, trail development, or thematic tourism routes (e.g., culinary, arts, adventure).
  • Prepare comprehensive reports, business cases, and compelling presentations for municipal councils, funding bodies, and community partners to secure support and investment for tourism projects.
  • Lead or contribute to the development of destination marketing and branding strategies in collaboration with marketing teams to ensure promotional efforts align with the strategic plan.
  • Create and manage budgets for tourism development projects, monitor expenditures, and ensure financial accountability and adherence to funding guidelines.
  • Author and manage grant applications to provincial, federal, and private foundations to secure external funding for tourism infrastructure and programming.
  • Facilitate workshops, public meetings, and stakeholder consultations to gather community input and build consensus around tourism development priorities.
  • Develop and interpret key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the economic, social, and environmental impact of tourism activities and strategic initiatives.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to senior management and elected officials on tourism-related policies, land-use planning, and regulatory matters.
  • Champion the principles of sustainable and responsible tourism, developing policies and programs that minimize negative impacts and maximize benefits for the local community and environment.
