Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conceptualize and develop innovative toy and game concepts from initial ideation and brainstorming through final production, ensuring alignment with brand strategy and market opportunities.
  • Create compelling and detailed 2D concept sketches, illustrations, and product renderings to effectively communicate design intent and play patterns.
  • Develop and refine 3D models of toys and components using CAD software such as SolidWorks, Rhino, or ZBrush for prototyping, evaluation, and manufacturing.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including engineers, product managers, marketers, and quality assurance, to ensure designs are viable, cost-effective, and meet all project goals.
  • Research and analyze market trends, consumer insights, competitor activity, and new technologies to identify opportunities for innovation and product line growth.
  • Prepare and deliver engaging design presentations and pitches to internal stakeholders, design leadership, and external partners to gain buy-in and feedback.
  • Build and iterate on physical prototypes using 3D printing, foam core, sculpting, and other rapid prototyping methods to test form, function, and ergonomics.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive product specification documents, including CMF (color, material, finish) callouts, deco guides, and feature descriptions.
  • Translate licensed characters and intellectual property (IP) into authentic and compelling toy products that honor the brand's essence.
  • Conduct and participate in child play-testing sessions to gather firsthand feedback, identify usability issues, and validate the fun factor of new concepts.
  • Ensure all designs adhere to global toy safety standards and regulations (e.g., ASTM F963, CPSC, EN71) in collaboration with the safety and compliance team.
  • Work directly with overseas vendors and manufacturing partners to review tooling, plastics, and pre-production samples, providing clear and actionable feedback.
  • Drive the development of innovative play features, mechanisms, and electronic integrations that enhance the user experience and provide high play value.
  • Develop unique and on-trend color palettes, material selections, and graphic applications for new products.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, tracking progress and ensuring all design deliverables are completed on schedule to meet critical path milestones.
  • Contribute actively to creative brainstorming sessions, bringing fresh perspectives and a high volume of ideas to the innovation pipeline.
  • Partner with the packaging design team to ensure a cohesive brand message and an exciting unboxing experience for the consumer.
  • Stay current with advancements in manufacturing techniques, sustainable materials, and emerging technologies relevant to the toy industry.
  • Analyze post-launch product performance and consumer reviews to extract key learnings that can be applied to future design projects.
  • Create compelling visuals and support materials for trade show presentations, sales meetings, and marketing campaigns.
  • Provide art direction and feedback to external freelance designers, illustrators, and model makers to maintain design quality and consistency.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expert Sketching & Illustration: High-level ability to quickly communicate ideas through both digital and traditional sketching.
  • 3D CAD Modeling: Proficiency in 3D modeling software such as SolidWorks, Rhino, and/or ZBrush.
  • Adobe Creative Suite: Mastery of Photoshop and Illustrator for concept art, renderings, and creating production-ready deco guides.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) in Toy Design, Industrial Design, or Product Design.
