Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide expert counsel to clients on all aspects of import and export regulations, including customs valuation methodologies, country of origin determination, and complex tariff classification (HTS).
  • Design, implement, and manage robust global trade compliance programs and internal control frameworks to minimize risk and ensure adherence to all applicable laws.
  • Conduct thorough analyses of international free trade agreements (e.g., USMCA, CPTPP) to identify duty-saving opportunities and ensure clients meet stringent origin requirements.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with customs authorities and other government agencies (e.g., CBP, BIS, DDTC), professionally managing inquiries, audits, and official requests.
  • Lead comprehensive trade compliance audits and risk assessments of client operations, identifying potential vulnerabilities and recommending corrective action plans.
  • Guide clients through the application and management of specialized customs programs such as Foreign Trade Zones (FTZ), duty drawback, and bonded warehousing to optimize cash flow and reduce costs.
  • Develop market entry strategies for new international markets, providing detailed analysis on tariffs, non-tariff barriers, and local regulatory landscapes.
  • Oversee the preparation and submission of complex import/export documentation, ensuring accuracy for licenses, permits, and other required government declarations.
  • Continuously monitor and interpret changes in international trade laws, sanctions (OFAC), and export control regulations (EAR, ITAR), proactively communicating impacts and required actions to clients.
  • Develop and deliver customized training programs for client personnel on trade compliance policies, procedures, and industry best practices.
  • Spearhead projects focused on global supply chain optimization, leveraging trade and customs knowledge to create more efficient and resilient logistics networks.
  • Represent and defend clients during customs audits and government investigations, preparing detailed responses and negotiating potential penalties or settlements.
  • Analyze the real-time impact of geopolitical shifts, trade disputes, and new tariffs on client supply chains, advising on risk mitigation and strategic pivots.
  • Evaluate and manage the performance of third-party service providers like customs brokers and freight forwarders to ensure they meet strict compliance and service level standards.
  • Assist legal and commercial teams in reviewing international sales contracts, distribution agreements, and Incoterms to ensure alignment with trade compliance best practices.
  • Advise on the complex intersection of transfer pricing and customs valuation, helping clients develop and defend their valuation policies to both tax and customs authorities.
  • Guide clients in the selection and implementation of Global Trade Management (GTM) software solutions to automate and enhance their compliance processes.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and perform exploratory data analysis to uncover trends in duties, taxes, and shipping activities.
  • Contribute to the development of the firm's or practice's thought leadership through writing articles, white papers, and client alerts on emerging trade issues.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional business units, such as finance, legal, and logistics, to ensure a cohesive and integrated approach to trade compliance.
  • Participate in business development activities, including proposal writing and client presentations, to help grow the trade consulting practice.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Tariff Classification Expertise: Deep proficiency in assigning Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) codes for a wide variety of products and defending those classifications.
  • Customs Valuation Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of the methods of customs valuation and the ability to apply and document them correctly.
  • Export Controls (EAR & ITAR): Strong working knowledge of U.S. export control regulations, including jurisdiction, classification, and licensing.
  • Free Trade Agreement Fluency: Ability to analyze FTA rules of origin, perform product qualification, and generate required documentation.
  • Regulatory Interpretation: Skill in reading, understanding, and interpreting dense legal and regulatory texts and applying them to practical business scenarios.
  • Trade Compliance Auditing: Experience in planning, executing, and reporting on internal and external trade compliance audits and risk assessments.
  • Licensed Customs Broker (LCB): LCB certification is a highly desirable, often critical, credential that demonstrates a certified level of expertise.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Candidates with a proven track record of managing complex trade projects and direct interaction with government agencies are strongly preferred.
