Primary Functions

A Trades Assistant's day is varied and dynamic. Core responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Actively assisting qualified tradespeople (such as electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and mechanics) with a wide range of installation, repair, and maintenance tasks.
Safely and efficiently handling, transporting, and distributing materials, tools, and equipment across the worksite to ensure they are available where and when needed.
Precisely measuring, cutting, and preparing materials like timber, pipe, and metal according to instructions from a tradesperson or work order specifications.
Operating a diverse range of hand and power tools, including drills, grinders, saws, and impact wrenches, ensuring they are used safely and maintained correctly.
Performing rigorous site clean-up duties, including sweeping, removing debris, and organizing work areas to maintain a safe, hazard-free, and professional environment.
Assisting in the assembly and installation of components, fixtures, and structures, carefully following technical drawings and verbal instructions.
Supporting excavation activities by digging trenches, assisting with backfilling, and ensuring a safe perimeter around earthmoving equipment.
Preparing surfaces for finishing work, which can include tasks like sanding, cleaning, scraping, and applying primer for painters or other finishers.
Loading and unloading materials and equipment from trucks and delivery vehicles, often involving coordinated team lifts and manual handling techniques.
Diligently following all established Workplace Health & Safety (WHS/OH&S) policies, including the consistent and correct use of all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Assisting electricians by pulling electrical cables through conduits and walls, and helping to mount fixtures, switches, and outlets.
Supporting plumbers by assisting with the layout of piping systems, cutting and joining pipes, and helping to install sinks, toilets, and other fixtures.
Aiding mechanical fitters in the disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly of machinery and mechanical components during maintenance or repair jobs.
Helping welders and fabricators by positioning and securing metal parts, grinding welds, and performing basic fabrication tasks under supervision.
Setting up and dismantling temporary structures such as scaffolding and work platforms, always under the guidance of a licensed and experienced professional.
Performing routine checks and basic preventative maintenance on tools, equipment, and site vehicles, such as cleaning, lubrication, and fluid top-ups.
Acting as a safety spotter for heavy machinery operators, ensuring clear communication and maintaining safe distances for ground personnel.
Mixing compounds such as concrete, mortar, or grout in the correct ratios to support masonry, concreting, or tiling work.
Reading and interpreting basic work orders, plans, or schematics to understand project requirements and assist tradespeople more effectively.
Proactively identifying and reporting any potential safety hazards, equipment malfunctions, or material shortages to the site supervisor or leading hand in a timely manner.

Secondary Functions

Assisting with basic inventory management tasks such as logging tool usage, recording materials used on a job, and notifying supervisors of low stock levels.
Actively participating in daily pre-start meetings, toolbox talks, and other safety briefings to remain aware of daily tasks and potential site hazards.

Required Skills & Competencies
