Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide direct, hands-on assistance to skilled tradespeople, including electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and HVAC technicians, across various construction, installation, and repair projects.
  • Load, unload, and strategically stage building materials, tools, and heavy equipment at the job site to ensure efficient workflow for the entire team.
  • Prepare and maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment by clearing debris, organizing materials, and removing potential hazards from the job site.
  • Operate a diverse range of basic hand tools (hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers) and power tools (drills, grinders, circular saws, reciprocating saws) safely and effectively.
  • Perform precise measurements, cuts, and fittings of materials such as lumber, piping, and conduit according to technical specifications and blueprints under direct supervision.
  • Assist in foundational construction tasks, including digging trenches for utilities, backfilling excavations, and preparing sites for concrete pours.
  • Erect and dismantle temporary job site structures, such as scaffolding, safety barriers, and temporary weather protection, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
  • Support the installation of core systems by pulling wire and cable, fetching parts for plumbing fixtures, and assisting with the setup of HVAC ductwork.
  • Perform finishing tasks which may include basic painting, applying caulk and sealants, and assisting with drywall installation and patching.
  • Mix, pour, and spread materials like concrete, mortar, and grout for foundations, walkways, and repair work.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and cleaning of all tools and equipment to ensure they remain in safe and proper working condition.
  • Strictly adhere to all Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines and company-specific safety protocols, including the consistent use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Act as a designated "fire watch" during welding or cutting operations to prevent and mitigate fire hazards.
  • Serve as a spotter and signal person for heavy equipment operators to guide safe movement and positioning of machinery in congested areas.
  • Perform basic demolition of walls, flooring, and other structures using appropriate tools while controlling dust and debris.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with the setup and operation of auxiliary job site equipment, such as pumps, compressors, and generators.
  • Run essential errands to pick up supplies, parts, and materials from suppliers and distribution centers to prevent project delays.
  • Support in the rigging of materials for crane lifts, ensuring loads are secure and balanced correctly.
  • Help maintain accurate daily logs of work performed, materials used, and any challenges encountered on the job site.
  • Participate in daily safety briefings ("toolbox talks") to stay informed about site-specific hazards and safety procedures.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Tool Proficiency: Demonstrated ability to safely and effectively operate common hand tools and power tools (e.g., drills, saws, grinders).
  • Basic Measurement & Math: Competency in using a tape measure for accurate measurements and performing basic arithmetic calculations.
  • Material Handling: Experience in lifting, carrying, and moving heavy materials (50+ lbs) and equipment safely, both manually and with assistance.
  • Site Safety Knowledge: Foundational understanding of construction site safety practices. OSHA 10 certification is highly preferred.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: A natural inclination for understanding how mechanical systems work and a knack for hands-on problem-solving.
  • Blueprint Reading: Basic ability to read and interpret construction blueprints, schematics, and technical work orders.
  • Valid Driver's License: A valid driver's license and a clean driving record are often required for operating company vehicles and running errands.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Certificate of completion from a vocational school or pre-apprenticeship trade program.

  • Building & Construction Trades
  • Industrial Maintenance Technology

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0-2 years of experience in a construction, maintenance, or general labor environment.

Preferred: Previous experience on an active commercial or residential construction site is a significant advantage. A demonstrated history of reliability and a strong safety record are paramount.
