As a Train Supervisor, you are the frontline leader responsible for the safe, efficient, and punctual execution of all train operations within your assigned territory. You will serve as the direct manager, mentor, and guide for our train crews, including Locomotive Engineers and Conductors. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide direct supervision, leadership, and performance management to train crews to ensure adherence to operational standards and company policies.
  • Ensure and enforce strict compliance with all Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) safety rules, hazardous materials regulations, and railroad operating rules (e.g., GCOR).
  • Oversee and coordinate all train movements, switching activities, and yard operations to maximize efficiency, safety, and on-time performance.
  • Act as the Manager-in-Charge during incidents, accidents, or service disruptions, leading the initial response, investigation, and reporting efforts.
  • Conduct regular efficiency tests, job observations, and skills assessments on employees to ensure proficiency and identify developmental needs.
  • Manage crew scheduling and assignments to ensure compliance with Hours of Service (HOS) regulations and collective bargaining agreements (CBAs).
  • Serve as the primary liaison between crews, dispatchers, yardmasters, and mechanical departments to resolve operational conflicts and maintain network fluidity.
  • Investigate, document, and respond to service failures, customer issues, and safety-related events, implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Administer coaching, counseling, and disciplinary action in a fair and consistent manner, in accordance with company policy and labor agreements.
  • Analyze operational data related to train delays, crew performance, asset utilization, and fuel consumption to identify negative trends and drive improvements.
  • Ensure trains are properly built, including correct tonnage distribution and placement of hazardous material cars, in compliance with all regulations.
  • Lead daily job briefings and safety meetings to communicate critical operational information, safety alerts, and performance goals.
  • Respond to and manage service disruptions caused by weather, track conditions, or mechanical failures by implementing contingency and recovery plans.
  • Perform field inspections of equipment, track conditions, and crew activities to proactively identify and mitigate potential safety hazards.
  • Champion a positive safety culture by actively promoting safety awareness, leading by example, and holding all team members accountable for safe practices.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in the development and onboarding of new train service employees, providing mentorship and hands-on training.
  • Participate in post-incident reviews and root cause analysis committees to develop and implement long-term preventative strategies.
  • Contribute to the management of the departmental budget, including monitoring overtime, crew travel, and other operational expenses.
  • Foster positive labor relations by maintaining open communication with union representatives and addressing employee concerns effectively.
  • Evaluate and recommend improvements to operating plans, schedules, and procedures to enhance safety, efficiency, and customer service.
  • Support special projects related to infrastructure upgrades, new technology implementation, or seasonal operational planning.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Railroad Operations Expertise: In-depth knowledge of train movements, yard switching, and network logistics.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Strong proficiency with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations, including Hours of Service (HOS) and safety standards.
  • Operating Rules Mastery: Qualification and expertise in railroad operating rules, such as the General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR) or NORAC.
  • Incident Investigation: Skilled in formal accident/incident investigation techniques, evidence preservation, and root cause analysis.
  • Systems Proficiency: Competency with railroad-specific software, including train management, crew scheduling, and data reporting systems.
  • Hazardous Materials Handling: Knowledge of regulations and procedures for the safe transport of hazardous materials.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • A minimum of 5-7 years of progressive experience within railroad operations.

Preferred:

  • At least 2 years of prior experience in a supervisory or leadership role within the rail industry.
  • Prior certification as a Train Conductor and/or Locomotive Engineer is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience working within a unionized environment and managing according to collective bargaining agreements.
