Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Independently perform and manage complex therapeutic apheresis procedures, including but not limited to plasmapheresis, red blood cell exchange, leukapheresis, and platelet depletion.
- Administer blood components, derivatives, and cellular therapy products, meticulously verifying product and patient identification in accordance with strict institutional and regulatory protocols.
- Conduct comprehensive pre-procedure patient assessments, including reviewing medical history, current health status, lab values (e.g., CBC, coagulation profiles), and ensuring vascular access is adequate.
- Provide continuous, vigilant patient monitoring throughout transfusion and apheresis procedures for any signs of adverse reactions, fluid shifts, or hemodynamic instability.
- Initiate immediate and appropriate nursing interventions and emergency response for adverse events, such as transfusion reactions or citrate toxicity, and document all actions taken.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot sophisticated apheresis equipment (e.g., Spectra Optia, Amicus) and other medical devices, ensuring proper function and sterility.
- Educate patients and their families on the procedure, potential side effects, and post-procedure care instructions to ensure understanding and promote patient compliance.
- Obtain informed consent from patients prior to any procedure, ensuring they fully comprehend the risks, benefits, and alternatives to the proposed treatment.
- Perform and manage the collection of hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPC) and other cellular therapy products from both autologous and allogeneic donors for stem cell transplantation.
- Maintain impeccable and legally sound documentation of all procedures, patient responses, and product administration details within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
- Ensure the integrity and safety of the patient's vascular access, whether it be peripheral IVs, fistulas, or central venous catheters (CVCs), providing necessary site care.
- Serve as a primary clinical resource and consultant for transfusion medicine practices to nurses, physicians, and other staff on inpatient units.
- Collaborate directly with attending physicians to develop, implement, and modify the patient's plan of care based on procedural outcomes and patient tolerance.
- Strictly adhere to all safety and quality standards set forth by regulatory and accrediting bodies, including AABB, FDA, FACT, and The Joint Commission.

Education & Experience
Educational Background
Minimum Education:
