Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Perform and interpret a full range of complex immunohematology procedures, including ABO/Rh testing, antibody detection and identification, and resolution of serologic discrepancies.
Execute routine and complex crossmatching protocols, utilizing both manual and automated methods to ensure donor-recipient compatibility for transfusion.
Conduct comprehensive transfusion reaction investigations, including clerical checks, visual hemolysis inspection, DATs, and repeat pre-transfusion testing to determine the cause of adverse events.
Skillfully manage and maintain an adequate inventory of blood products, including red blood cells, platelets, plasma, and cryoprecipitate, through careful monitoring, ordering, and rotation.
Select and prepare specialized blood components for sensitive patient populations, such as leukocyte-reduced, irradiated, washed, or antigen-negative units.
Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot highly complex automated and semi-automated blood bank analyzers and laboratory equipment, ensuring optimal performance and accurate results.
Provide expert technical and clinical consultation to physicians, residents, and nursing staff regarding test results, blood product selection, and transfusion best practices.
Respond with urgency and precision to emergency situations, including trauma activations and Massive Transfusion Protocols (MTP), by rapidly issuing appropriate blood products.

Adhere strictly to all safety, infection control, and regulatory guidelines established by AABB, CAP, FDA, and The Joint Commission.

Assist in the development, validation, and implementation of new testing procedures, methodologies, and laboratory instrumentation.

Secondary Functions
