Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Perform and interpret ABO/Rh blood grouping tests on patient and donor samples, meticulously investigating and resolving any discrepancies to ensure absolute accuracy.
Execute complex serological and/or electronic crossmatch procedures to confirm the complete compatibility between donor blood units and patient recipients prior to transfusion.
Conduct comprehensive antibody screening tests on patient and donor plasma to detect the presence of unexpected, clinically significant red cell antibodies.
Utilize and interpret results from advanced antibody identification panels to pinpoint the specific nature of detected antibodies, guiding the selection of appropriate antigen-negative blood products.
Skillfully prepare and modify blood components for transfusion, including thawing Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP), pooling platelets and cryoprecipitate, and preparing precise aliquots for neonatal or pediatric patients.
Accurately issue blood, plasma, and other components to clinical staff, ensuring meticulous verification of patient and unit identification according to strict AABB and internal facility standards.
Manage and respond to high-pressure emergency transfusion requests, including activating and executing massive transfusion protocols (MTP) for trauma and surgical patients, with exceptional speed and accuracy.
Perform and meticulously document daily, weekly, and monthly quality control on all reagents, equipment, and testing procedures to ensure the integrity and accuracy of all laboratory results.
Investigate, document, and report suspected adverse transfusion reactions by performing post-transfusion serological testing and collaborating effectively with physicians and nursing staff.
Maintain precise, compliant, and contemporaneous records of all tests performed, results obtained, and products issued using the facility’s Laboratory Information System (LIS).
Manage the blood product inventory, including receiving and inspecting incoming shipments, monitoring temperature-controlled storage units, and performing stock rotation to minimize wastage.
Perform specialized immunohematology techniques, such as direct antiglobulin tests (DAT), antigen typing, elution, and adsorption studies, to resolve complex serological cases.
Adhere strictly to all regulatory and accreditation standards, including those set forth by the AABB, FDA, CAP, and The Joint Commission, during every phase of work.
Operate, calibrate, and perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting on sophisticated laboratory instrumentation, including automated blood analyzers, irradiators, and centrifuges.
Communicate critical results, product availability, and special transfusion requirements clearly and professionally to physicians, nurses, and other members of the healthcare team.
