Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Assist in the collection, organization, and analysis of transportation data, including ridership figures, automatic passenger counts (APC), on-time performance, and fare collection information.
Conduct field surveys and observations at transit centers, bus stops, and on-board vehicles to gather qualitative and quantitative data on passenger behavior, service quality, and infrastructure conditions.
Prepare clear and compelling maps, charts, and data visualizations using GIS software (like ArcGIS) and other business intelligence tools to support planning reports and public presentations.
Support the development and evaluation of transit service changes, including route realignments, schedule adjustments, and the introduction of new services.
Contribute to the creation of short-range and long-range transit plans, strategic documents, and technical memoranda by conducting research, writing drafts, and editing content.
Participate in community outreach and stakeholder engagement activities, including public meetings and pop-up events, to gather feedback and communicate project goals.
Perform detailed research on transit best practices, emerging technologies (like micro-mobility and MaaS), and transportation policy from other cities and regions.
Assist in reviewing development proposals and site plans to assess their impact on the transit network and recommend necessary transportation demand management (TDM) strategies.
Help maintain and update key transit databases, including bus stop inventories, GIS layers, and service schedule information (GTFS).
Draft and prepare materials for internal and external meetings, including agendas, PowerPoint presentations, summary notes, and follow-up action items.

Secondary Functions

Support senior staff with grant writing and funding application processes by gathering data and drafting narrative sections.
Provide general administrative and project support to the planning and/or operations departments as needed.
Assist in the preparation and distribution of public-facing materials such as service change notices, rider alerts, and system maps.
Monitor and document customer feedback received through various channels, identifying trends and recurring issues for further investigation.
Participate in inter-departmental meetings to gain a broader understanding of how planning, operations, marketing, and finance collaborate within a transit agency.
Help with the logistical planning and execution of public workshops, advisory committee meetings, and other engagement events.
Perform quality control checks on public-facing data and information, such as website schedules and real-time tracking applications.
Assist in the analysis of pedestrian and bicycle access to transit stops to identify gaps and recommend infrastructure improvements.
Create graphics and content for social media and digital communications related to planning projects and service updates.
Shadow senior planners and managers to learn about project management, budgeting, and public policy development.
Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory analysis to answer specific questions from leadership or partner organizations.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Geographic Information Systems (GIS): Proficiency with ESRI ArcGIS Pro/ArcMap or QGIS for spatial analysis, data management, and cartography.
Data Analysis: Strong ability in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, v-lookups, formulas) for analyzing datasets. Experience with SQL, Python (Pandas), or R is a significant plus.
Research & Documentation: Ability to conduct thorough research, synthesize complex information, and write clear, concise technical reports and memos.
