Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Coordinate and manage the daily scheduling of all inbound and outbound shipments across various modes, including Full Truckload (FTL), Less-Than-Truckload (LTL), ocean, and air freight.
- Select, vet, and onboard new freight carriers, ensuring they meet company standards for safety, service, and cost-effectiveness.
- Negotiate freight rates and service level agreements (SLAs) with carriers and brokers to optimize transportation spend while maintaining high performance standards.
- Utilize the Transportation Management System (TMS) to tender loads, track shipment status, and manage freight data with a high degree of accuracy.
- Act as the primary point of contact for carriers, warehouses, and internal departments (like Customer Service and Sales) regarding shipment status and logistics inquiries.
- Proactively monitor all shipments in transit, identifying potential delays or issues and implementing timely solutions to mitigate disruptions to the supply chain.
- Audit and process freight invoices, diligently reconciling discrepancies between quoted rates and billed charges to ensure accurate financial accounting.
- Ensure all shipping documentation, such as Bills of Lading (BOL), proof of delivery (POD), and customs paperwork, is accurate, complete, and properly filed for compliance and record-keeping.
- Prepare and analyze regular reports on key transportation metrics, including on-time performance, cost-per-shipment, and carrier scorecards, providing insights to leadership.
- File and manage freight claims for lost or damaged goods, working with carriers and insurance providers through to a successful resolution.
- Maintain a deep understanding of and ensure compliance with all relevant transportation regulations, including those from the Department of Transportation (DOT), FMCSA, and international shipping bodies.
- Collaborate closely with the warehouse team to optimize dock scheduling, manage carrier appointments, and ensure efficient loading and unloading processes.
- Provide exceptional support to internal and external customers by communicating shipment updates, estimated delivery times, and any service exceptions in a clear and timely manner.
- Analyze shipping lanes and freight volumes to identify opportunities for consolidation, mode optimization, and overall network efficiency improvements.
- Manage the end-to-end logistics for special projects, including expedited shipments, oversized loads, or new product rollouts, ensuring all unique requirements are met.
- Develop and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with a network of core carriers to secure capacity and drive partnership performance.
- Evaluate and report on carrier performance, holding regular business reviews to discuss performance metrics, challenges, and areas for improvement.
- Resolve complex transportation-related issues, such as rerouting shipments, managing refused deliveries, and coordinating reverse logistics.
- Support the broader Supply Chain department by providing freight cost estimates for new business bids, sales proposals, and budget planning.
- Continuously seek out and recommend process improvements within the transportation function to enhance service, reduce costs, and increase operational efficiency.
