Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Respond immediately and effectively to trauma activations and medical emergencies as a designated member of the rapid response trauma team.
Skillfully perform and meticulously document patient vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation, promptly reporting any critical changes to the nursing or physician staff.
Proactively assist physicians and nurses with a wide range of invasive and non-invasive procedures, such as suturing, chest tube insertion, and central line placement, by preparing sterile fields, organizing instruments, and anticipating needs.
Demonstrate proficiency in venipuncture (phlebotomy) to obtain necessary blood samples and skillfully insert peripheral IV catheters for the administration of fluids and medications.
Accurately perform 12-lead electrocardiograms (EKGs) on patients with cardiac complaints or trauma, ensuring proper lead placement and communicating critical results immediately to the attending provider.
Provide essential direct patient care, including cleaning and dressing wounds, applying splints and various immobilization devices, and assisting with patient positioning to prevent further injury and ensure comfort.
Actively monitor and manage patient comfort and safety, responding promptly to call lights, providing basic hygiene, and ensuring the patient's environment is safe and secure.
Confidently operate, troubleshoot, and maintain a wide array of specialized medical equipment, including cardiac monitors, fluid warmers, blood warmers, and other trauma-specific devices.
Initiate high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and actively assist in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) protocols under the direct supervision of a physician or advanced practice provider.
Prepare patients for safe and efficient transport to other hospital departments, such as Radiology, the Operating Room, or an inpatient unit, ensuring all necessary documentation and equipment accompany them.
Methodically collect, label, and process patient specimens, including blood, urine, and cultures, following strict laboratory protocols to ensure sample integrity and accurate results.
Assist with the application and removal of casts, splints, and other orthopedic devices as directed by an orthopedic surgeon or emergency provider.
Reliably perform point-of-care testing, such as blood glucose checks, and accurately record the results in the patient's electronic medical record (EMR) in a timely manner.
Provide clear, calm, and compassionate communication to patients and their families, explaining procedures within the scope of practice and offering emotional support during highly stressful and emotional situations.
Uphold patient confidentiality and privacy with the utmost integrity, adhering strictly to all HIPAA regulations and hospital policies.

Secondary Functions

Meticulously clean, decontaminate, restock, and organize trauma bays and patient care rooms after each use to ensure a constant state of readiness for the next emergency.
Conduct daily inventory checks of trauma carts, supply closets, and specialized equipment, placing orders and restocking items as needed to prevent critical shortages.
Perform routine calibration and quality control checks on point-of-care testing equipment (e.g., glucometers) to ensure the accuracy and reliability of all diagnostic results.
Assist with essential administrative and clerical duties, such as entering patient data into the EMR, preparing patient charts, and handling paperwork related to patient admissions, transfers, or discharges.
Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams, including members from radiology, laboratory, pharmacy, and respiratory therapy, to coordinate seamless, efficient, and holistic patient care.
Serve as a preceptor or mentor for newly hired Trauma Technicians and other support staff, providing hands-on guidance and training on department-specific procedures, equipment, and workflows.
Actively participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives, mock codes, and safety drills designed to enhance patient outcomes and improve overall team performance.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or GED.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Completion of an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or Medical Assistant (MA) program.

Preferred Education:

Associate's Degree in a related field.
Advanced certifications such as ACLS or PALS.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years of experience in a direct patient care role within an acute care or pre-hospital setting.
