Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute precise and strategic pruning of trees and shrubs to enhance their structural integrity, health, and aesthetic appeal, adhering strictly to ANSI A300 standards.
  • Ascend trees safely and efficiently using advanced climbing techniques, including Single Rope Technique (SRT) and Doubled Rope Technique (DdRT), to access work areas.
  • Operate and maintain a wide array of specialized equipment, such as chainsaws, pole pruners, chippers, stump grinders, and aerial lifts, with a paramount focus on safety.
  • Perform complex and technical tree removals, including felling trees in confined spaces and utilizing sophisticated rigging systems to carefully lower large sections of wood.
  • Analyze and assess tree risk, identifying structural defects, decay, and disease to recommend appropriate mitigation measures like pruning, cabling, or removal.
  • Skillfully tie and utilize a variety of industry-specific knots and set up rigging systems to safely manage the forces involved in lowering limbs and wood.
  • Install structural support systems, such as cables and braces, to reduce the risk of failure in structurally weak or multi-stemmed trees.
  • Respond promptly and effectively to emergency tree work resulting from storms or other natural events, often working in challenging and hazardous conditions.
  • Conduct thorough daily inspections of all climbing gear, ropes, and equipment to ensure they meet safety standards and are in proper working condition before use.
  • Establish and maintain a safe and organized work zone by setting up cones, signs, and managing pedestrian and vehicle traffic around the job site.
  • Ensure the job site is meticulously cleaned upon completion of work, which includes raking, chipping all brush, and removing all wood and debris.
  • Operate heavy machinery, including compact loaders and bucket trucks, to assist in lifting, moving, and processing tree material efficiently.
  • Drive commercial vehicles, often requiring a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), to transport crew and equipment to and from job sites safely.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of tree identification, recognizing common local species and their specific growth habits, requirements, and potential issues.
  • Identify common pests and diseases affecting trees and report findings to the crew leader or arborist for Plant Health Care (PHC) recommendations and treatment plans.

Secondary Functions

  • Communicate professionally and effectively with clients on-site to explain the scope of work, answer questions, and ensure complete customer satisfaction with the finished product.
  • Actively participate in and contribute to daily pre-job safety briefings (tailgate talks) to review hazards, emergency procedures, and the specific plan for the day's work.
  • Assist in the training and development of new ground personnel and apprentice climbers, mentoring them in safe and efficient work practices and equipment operation.
  • Accurately complete necessary paperwork, including daily work orders, vehicle and equipment inspection logs, and individual time sheets.
  • Contribute to a positive and productive team environment by demonstrating a strong work ethic, offering assistance to teammates, and maintaining open, respectful communication.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Climbing & Rigging: Mastery of modern climbing systems (SRT/DdRT), rope management, and the physics of rigging for safe and efficient tree access and removal.
  • Chainsaw Proficiency & Safety: Expert handling, maintenance, and safe operation of chainsaws both on the ground and at height, including advanced felling and cutting techniques.
  • Equipment Operation: Skilled operation of aerial lifts, wood chippers, stump grinders, and other heavy equipment common to the arboriculture industry.
  • Tree Biology & Identification: Solid understanding of tree physiology, growth patterns, and the ability to identify common local tree and shrub species.
  • ANSI Z133 & A300 Standards: In-depth knowledge and practical application of industry safety (Z133) and pruning (A300) standards in all work performed.
  • Knot Tying: The ability to quickly and correctly tie, dress, and set a wide range of arboricultural knots essential for climbing and rigging operations.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Industry-specific certifications such as ISA Certified Tree Worker Climber Specialist® or TCIA Certified Treecare Safety Professional (CTSP).
  • An Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:
1-3 years of progressive experience as a climbing arborist or tree trimmer, with demonstrated proficiency in core responsibilities.

3+ years of experience, particularly with large, technical removals, crane work, or specialized Plant Health Care applications. A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is also highly preferred.
