Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive preventative maintenance inspections (PMIs) on heavy-duty trucks, trailers, and coaches, meticulously checking all critical systems to prevent future breakdowns and ensure DOT/MTO compliance.
  • Utilize advanced OEM and aftermarket diagnostic software and tools to accurately troubleshoot and identify complex issues within engine, transmission, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Conduct major and minor repairs on a variety of diesel engines, including complete overhauls, fuel system services, and performance tuning to restore optimal functionality and efficiency.
  • Diagnose and repair sophisticated vehicle electronic systems, including engine control modules (ECM), body control modules (BCM), and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).
  • Service and repair complex air and hydraulic brake systems, ensuring all components from compressors and governors to brake chambers and slack adjusters meet or exceed safety standards.
  • Perform intricate repairs and adjustments on steering and suspension systems, including multi-axle wheel alignments, to ensure vehicle stability, driver control, and proper tire wear.
  • Troubleshoot and repair complex HVAC systems in truck cabs and coach passenger areas, ensuring a comfortable and safe environment for drivers and passengers.
  • Execute professional-level welding and fabrication tasks as needed to repair vehicle frames, exhaust systems, and other structural components, using MIG or stick welding techniques.
  • Complete detailed and accurate work orders, documenting all diagnostic steps, parts used, and labor hours for proper record-keeping, warranty claims, and customer billing.
  • Test drive vehicles both before and after repairs to verify the effectiveness of the work performed and ensure all systems are operating according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Interpret and apply technical manuals, schematics, and service bulletins to perform repairs accurately and efficiently according to manufacturer guidelines.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment by adhering to all company safety protocols (e.g., lock-out/tag-out) and environmental regulations.
  • Communicate effectively with service advisors, parts personnel, and fleet managers to provide clear updates on repair status, explain complex technical issues, and recommend necessary services.
  • Repair and maintain drivetrain components, including clutches, manual and automated transmissions, differentials, and driveshafts, ensuring smooth power transfer.
  • Perform road calls and emergency roadside assistance to diagnose and repair disabled vehicles in the field, working to minimize downtime and delivery delays.
  • Mentor and provide constructive guidance to apprentice technicians, sharing expert knowledge and best practices to foster team development and skill growth.
  • Stay current with emerging vehicle technologies, industry trends, and new repair techniques through continuous participation in manufacturer and third-party training.
  • Manage the installation and repair of auxiliary equipment such as liftgates, refrigeration units (reefers), and power take-off (PTO) systems.
  • Conduct thorough safety and compliance inspections in accordance with federal and provincial/state regulations (e.g., DOT, MTO annual inspections).
  • Perform service on modern diesel after-treatment systems, including Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems, to ensure emissions compliance.
  • Diagnose and repair trailer-specific systems, including lighting, ABS, suspension, and structural components to ensure the entire combination unit is roadworthy.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in managing shop parts inventory, including sourcing, ordering, and tracking necessary components for current and future jobs.
  • Contribute to a positive team environment by actively participating in daily safety briefings, toolbox talks, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain and care for all assigned and shared shop tools and equipment, reporting any damage or need for calibration to the shop foreman.
  • Provide clear and concise feedback to management on recurring vehicle issues and potential process improvements to enhance shop efficiency and quality.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Diagnostic Software Proficiency: Expertise with OEM and aftermarket diagnostic software (e.g., Cummins Insite, Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link, Paccar Davie, Bendix ACom).
  • Diesel Engine Systems: In-depth knowledge of diesel engine mechanics, fuel systems, and after-treatment technologies (DPF, SCR, EGR).
  • Brake Systems Expertise: Mastery of troubleshooting and repairing air brake systems, hydraulic brakes, and anti-lock braking systems (ABS).
  • Electrical/Electronic Systems: Strong ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams to diagnose and repair complex vehicle electrical and electronic systems.
  • Welding and Fabrication: Competency in welding (MIG, Stick) and metal fabrication for chassis and component repairs.
  • Drivetrain & Transmission: Deep knowledge of drivetrain components, including manual and automated transmissions, clutches, and differentials.
  • Certified Inspections: Authorization and experience in performing certified vehicle safety and compliance inspections (e.g., DOT/Annual).
  • HVAC Systems: Ability to diagnose and repair truck and coach heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
  • Hydraulics: Solid understanding and repair capability for hydraulic systems, including PTOs, wet kits, and liftgates.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a recognized Truck and Coach Technician Apprenticeship program or a certificate from a technical trade school.

  • Associate's Degree or Diploma in Diesel or Heavy-Duty Equipment Technology from an accredited technical college.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-8 years of hands-on experience as a licensed truck and coach technician in a dealership, fleet maintenance, or independent repair shop environment.

Preferred: Possession of a valid Journeyman license (e.g., 310T in Ontario, Red Seal in Canada, or state-level equivalent) is highly preferred. A collection of ASE Master Truck Technician certifications (T1-T8) is a significant asset and demonstrates a high level of expertise.
