Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive diagnostic assessments on heavy-duty truck and trailer systems using advanced diagnostic software and tools to accurately identify malfunctions and formulate effective repair plans.
  • Conduct thorough preventative maintenance (PM) inspections, including engine oil changes, chassis lubrication, fluid level checks, and filter replacements, strictly adhering to manufacturer specifications and regulatory compliance schedules.
  • Execute complex repairs and complete overhauls on major vehicle components, such as diesel engines, transmissions, clutches, differentials, and driveline components.
  • Diagnose and repair intricate vehicle electrical systems, including starting and charging systems, lighting, wiring harnesses, and onboard computer and sensor networks.
  • Service and repair commercial vehicle braking systems, including air brake systems, hydraulic brakes, anti-lock braking systems (ABS), and stability control systems.
  • Perform diagnostics and repairs on steering and suspension systems, including alignments, kingpin replacements, and repair of leaf springs and air ride suspension components.
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair trailer components, including landing gear, roll-up and swing doors, flooring, and structural elements.
  • Troubleshoot and repair modern diesel engine after-treatment systems, such as Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF), Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), and Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) systems.
  • Perform tire maintenance, including mounting, dismounting, balancing, and repairing tires, as well as monitoring tire wear and pressure to maximize lifespan and safety.
  • Diagnose and service vehicle heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to ensure operator comfort and safety.
  • Utilize welding and fabrication skills (MIG, Stick) to repair or modify vehicle frames, brackets, and other structural components as necessary.
  • Respond to and repair unscheduled breakdowns, performing emergency road service when required to minimize vehicle downtime.
  • Interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and schematics to understand complex systems and guide repair procedures.
  • Complete comprehensive vehicle road tests to verify that all repairs are completed successfully and the vehicle operates to specification.
  • Ensure all work performed meets or exceeds quality standards and is compliant with all federal, provincial, and municipal transportation regulations.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, adhering to all company and industry safety protocols and procedures.
  • Interface with drivers to gather detailed information about vehicle issues and provide clear explanations of the repairs performed.
  • Document all work orders, repairs, and parts used meticulously and accurately within the company's computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Stay current with emerging vehicle technologies, diagnostic techniques, and industry best practices through continuous training and professional development.
  • Perform annual Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP) or equivalent state/federal inspections, identifying and completing necessary repairs to certify vehicle roadworthiness.

  • Assist in managing the parts inventory, including sourcing, ordering, and tracking parts to ensure availability for both scheduled and unscheduled repairs.
  • Provide mentorship, technical guidance, and on-the-job training to apprentice mechanics and junior technicians.
  • Participate actively in daily toolbox talks and monthly safety meetings, contributing to a robust culture of safety and continuous improvement.
  • Recommend improvements to maintenance procedures, shop tools, and operational workflows to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Diagnostics: Proficiency in using electronic diagnostic tools and software such as Cummins Insite, Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link (DDDL), PACCAR Davie4, and Allison DOC.
  • Brake Systems Expertise: In-depth knowledge of air brake theory, diagnosis, and repair, including ABS and stability control systems.
  • Engine & Drivetrain: Strong capability in diagnosing and overhauling diesel engines, transmissions (manual and automated), and differentials.
  • Electrical & Electronics: Ability to read and interpret complex wiring diagrams and troubleshoot issues in multiplexed electrical systems.
  • After-Treatment Systems: Competence in diagnosing and repairing modern emissions systems (DPF, SCR, EGR).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Completion of a recognized Truck and Transport Mechanic apprenticeship program or documented equivalent combination of training and experience.

Preferred Education:

  • College Diploma or Technical Certificate from a recognized program in Diesel Technology, Truck and Coach Technician, or Heavy-Duty Equipment Technology.
  • Red Seal (310T), ASE Master Truck Technician, or equivalent state-level certifications are highly desirable.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-5+ years of journeyman-level experience working on Class 7 and 8 trucks in a dealer, fleet, or independent repair shop environment.

Preferred: Experience in a large-scale fleet maintenance setting is highly advantageous. Specific brand certifications (e.g., Cummins, PACCAR, Volvo, Freightliner) are a strong asset.
