Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive preventive maintenance (PM) services and inspections on tractors and trailers in accordance with company-defined schedules and DOT standards.
  • Diagnose complex malfunctions and perform subsequent repairs on all major vehicle systems, including diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, and drivelines.
  • Utilize advanced electronic diagnostic tools and software (such as Cummins Insite, PACCAR DAVIE, or Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link) to interpret fault codes and troubleshoot engine, electrical, and after-treatment systems.
  • Conduct thorough inspections and repairs of brake systems, including air brakes, hydraulic systems, and anti-lock braking systems (ABS), ensuring full functionality and safety.
  • Troubleshoot and repair vehicle electrical systems, including wiring harnesses, lighting, starting and charging systems, and onboard computer systems.
  • Perform diagnostics and repairs on HVAC systems, ensuring driver comfort and system efficiency through refrigerant recovery, recharging, and component replacement.
  • Mount, dismount, and balance tires, performing alignments and ensuring proper tire pressure and tread depth to maximize tire life and fuel efficiency.
  • Address and repair issues related to the chassis and suspension systems, including springs, shocks, and air ride components, to maintain vehicle stability and ride quality.
  • Complete repairs and maintenance on trailer components, including landing gear, doors, flooring, and liftgates, to ensure cargo security and operational readiness.
  • Accurately and meticulously document all maintenance activities, parts usage, and labor time on digital or paper work orders for proper record-keeping and billing.
  • Perform welding and fabrication tasks using MIG, TIG, or stick welding techniques to repair or modify vehicle frames, brackets, and other metal components.
  • Respond to and perform emergency road calls to diagnose and repair disabled vehicles in the field, making sound decisions to get the unit back in service safely.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in the shop, adhering to all safety protocols and procedures, including proper handling of hazardous materials.
  • Manage and maintain an inventory of parts and supplies, communicating needs to the parts manager or supervisor to ensure availability for upcoming jobs.
  • Test drive vehicles before and after repairs to verify that malfunctions have been corrected and the vehicle operates to specification.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior technicians or apprentices, sharing knowledge and best practices for vehicle repair and diagnostics.
  • Stay current with emerging vehicle technologies, industry trends, and manufacturer service bulletins by participating in ongoing training and professional development.
  • Perform state and federal vehicle inspections, ensuring all units meet or exceed regulatory requirements for safe operation on public highways.
  • Diagnose and repair complex after-treatment system issues, including DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter), SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction), and EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) systems.
  • Communicate effectively with drivers, service advisors, and fleet managers regarding vehicle status, required repairs, and estimated completion times.
  • Rebuild and replace major vehicle components such as engines, transmissions, and rear ends according to manufacturer specifications and guidelines.
  • Handle and dispose of hazardous waste materials, such as used oil, antifreeze, and filters, in compliance with environmental regulations.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in maintaining the service shop, including the upkeep and repair of shop equipment and tools.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of maintenance processes and standard operating procedures to enhance shop efficiency and quality of work.
  • Provide technical data and repair history reports to the Fleet Manager to support decision-making on vehicle lifecycle and replacement strategies.
  • Participate in regular safety meetings and contribute to a culture of safety awareness and accident prevention within the maintenance team.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing diesel engines (e.g., Cummins, Detroit, PACCAR, Volvo).
  • Expertise in troubleshooting and repairing air brake, hydraulic, and ABS systems.
  • Skilled in using electronic diagnostic software and tools for fault code interpretation.
  • Deep knowledge of vehicle after-treatment systems (DPF, SCR, EGR).
  • Competency in electrical system diagnostics, including reading schematics and using multimeters.
  • Welding and metal fabrication skills (MIG, Stick).
  • Experience with truck and trailer alignment equipment.
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is often required or highly preferred.
  • HVAC system certification (e.g., Section 609).
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and repair orders.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).

Preferred Education:

  • Technical school certificate or Associate's Degree in Diesel Technology, Heavy-Duty Truck Repair, or a related field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 2-7 years of hands-on experience as a diesel mechanic or truck technician.

Preferred:

  • Experience in a fleet maintenance facility or commercial dealership setting. A portfolio of ASE certifications (e.g., T-Series Medium/Heavy Truck) is highly desirable. Experience with a variety of Class 7-8 truck makes and models.
