Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Develop and execute detailed designs for various types of tunnels and underground structures, including those constructed via Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM), Sequential Excavation Methods (SEM/NATM), and cut-and-cover techniques.
- Perform complex 2D and 3D numerical modeling and finite element analysis (FEA) to simulate soil-structure interaction, ground movement, and lining stresses using software like PLAXIS, FLAC3D, and UDEC.
- Prepare comprehensive design packages, including detailed calculations, technical specifications, design reports, and contract drawings for tunnel linings, portals, and associated subterranean facilities.
- Conduct thorough geotechnical and geological site characterizations, interpreting investigation data (boreholes, lab tests) to develop ground models and select key design parameters.
- Spearhead the design and analysis of tunnel support systems, including segmental linings, sprayed concrete linings (SCL), rock bolts, and other ground reinforcement measures.
- Assess and mitigate geological and construction risks by developing robust risk registers and implementing mitigation strategies throughout the project lifecycle.
- Provide expert construction support by reviewing contractor submittals, responding to Requests for Information (RFIs), and resolving technical issues that arise during excavation and construction phases.
- Oversee and interpret data from geotechnical and structural instrumentation and monitoring programs to validate design assumptions and ensure the stability of the tunnel and surrounding environment.
- Design permanent and temporary waterproofing and drainage systems to manage groundwater and ensure the long-term durability and serviceability of the underground structure.
- Analyze the potential impact of tunneling on adjacent buildings, utilities, and third-party infrastructure, designing protective measures where necessary.
- Drive the development of tunnel alignment and geometry, optimizing the route to navigate geological constraints, subsurface utilities, and property boundaries.
- Ensure all design work complies with relevant national and international codes, standards, and industry best practices (e.g., AASHTO, AREMA, ITA, Eurocodes).
- Lead technical design meetings with clients, stakeholders, and multi-disciplinary teams to present design concepts, address concerns, and achieve consensus.
- Prepare detailed construction sequencing and methodology plans in collaboration with construction planners to ensure feasible and safe project execution.
