Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Set up, operate, and maintain CNC turret punch presses (e.g., Amada, Trumpf, Finn-Power) to process and fabricate sheet metal parts efficiently and safely.
  • Read and interpret complex engineering blueprints, schematics, and manufacturing work orders to determine job specifications and requirements.
  • Select, install, and align correct tooling, including punches and dies, according to setup sheets and production requirements.
  • Load and unload sheets of metal onto the machine, ensuring proper material type, thickness, and orientation.
  • Perform first-piece and in-process quality inspections using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, protractors, and height gauges to ensure parts meet strict tolerance and quality standards.
  • Monitor machine operation, listen for unusual sounds, and watch for malfunctions to prevent errors and ensure consistent production quality.
  • Make necessary adjustments to machine offsets and program parameters to correct deviations from specifications and maintain part accuracy.
  • Execute basic troubleshooting of machine alarms and operational issues, escalating complex problems to the maintenance team for resolution.
  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance on the turret press, including cleaning the machine, lubricating parts, and inspecting tooling for wear or damage.
  • Deburr, finish, and sort finished parts as required, ensuring they are free from sharp edges and ready for the next stage of production.
  • Accurately complete all required production documentation, including quality logs, production reports, and labor tracking sheets.
  • Optimize machine setup and run times to maximize throughput, reduce cycle times, and minimize material scrap.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area by adhering to company safety protocols and 5S lean manufacturing principles.
  • Verify programs by running simulations or performing dry runs to prevent crashes and ensure the program will produce the correct part.
  • Manage the inventory of tooling and consumables, reporting any shortages or damaged tools to the supervisor for timely replacement.

Secondary Functions

  • Collaborate with engineering and programming teams to provide feedback on part manufacturability and suggest program improvements.
  • Assist in training and mentoring new or less-experienced operators on machine setup, operation, and safety procedures.
  • Operate material handling equipment, such as forklifts or pallet jacks, to move raw materials and finished goods within the facility.
  • Participate actively in continuous improvement initiatives, offering suggestions to enhance safety, quality, and productivity.
  • Cross-train on other fabrication equipment, such as press brakes or laser cutters, to increase operational flexibility.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • CNC Turret Press Operation: Proven experience operating CNC turret punch presses, with specific knowledge of brands like Amada, Trumpf, or Strippit being highly desirable.
  • Blueprint & Schematic Reading: Strong ability to read and interpret detailed engineering drawings, including understanding geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Precision Measurement: Proficient in using a variety of measuring tools, including digital/dial calipers, micrometers, tape measures, and protractors, to verify part dimensions.
  • Tooling Management: Knowledge of turret press tooling, including selection, installation, setup, and maintenance of punches and dies.
  • Shop Mathematics: Solid understanding of basic math, including fractions, decimals, and geometry, for calculating dimensions and making adjustments.
  • Basic CNC Programming: Familiarity with G-code and M-code is a plus, including the ability to perform minor edits at the control.
  • Material Handling: Experience safely handling large sheets of metal and operating equipment like forklifts or overhead cranes.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate or Associate's Degree from a technical or vocational school in Machining, Manufacturing Technology, or a related discipline.
